# Alexander Gelbukh

Alexander Gelbukh works in natural language processing, and the papers here centre on how emotion and sentiment appear in text, particularly in conversation. One recurring question is how a system can follow the feelings that speakers express over the course of a dialogue and respond to them. Another is how well sentiment classifiers carry over from one language to another. The methods are neural throughout: graph-based and recurrent encoders for dialogue, generation models for replies, and pretrained transformer encoders compared across languages.

The most cited of these papers is [DialogueGCN](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/ghosal-2019-dialoguegcn-graph-convolutional-neural-network/) (2019). It treats emotion recognition in conversation as a problem on a directed graph. Each utterance becomes a node, and edges are typed by speaker pair and by direction in time. This lets the model capture how speakers influence one another and how one speaker's emotional state persists from turn to turn. [MIME](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/majumder-2020-mime-mimicking-emotions-empathetic-response/) (2020) moves from recognising emotion to producing empathetic replies. It rests on the idea that a listener partly mirrors the speaker's emotion, and that the degree of mirroring differs for positive and negative feelings.

The newest work turns to multilingual sentiment analysis. [Comparative Approaches to Sentiment Analysis](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/krasitskii-2025-comparative-approaches-sentiment-analysis-using/) (2025) tests three widely used transformer encoders on sentiment classification in nine languages: Arabic, Bulgarian, Hungarian, Finnish and five Western European languages. It scores each language separately and sets the results against corpus size, which shows how closely performance depends on the amount of training data available.

Gelbukh is based at the [Instituto Politécnico Nacional](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/instituto-politecnico-nacional/) in Mexico City, with bylines there from 1997. Earlier papers also list the Centro de Investigación y de Estudios Avanzados del Instituto Politécnico Nacional and the [Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/universidad-nacional-autonoma-de-mexico/). Co-authors on the conversation papers include [Deepanway Ghosal](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/authors/deepanway-ghosal/), [Navonil Majumder](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/authors/navonil-majumder/), [Soujanya Poria](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/authors/soujanya-poria/) and [Rada Mihalcea](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/authors/rada-mihalcea/). The work falls mainly under [Sentiment & emotion](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/topics/sentiment-emotion/), with a further paper in [Dialogue systems](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/topics/dialogue-systems/).

The most cited first (OpenAlex and our library).

1. **[DialogueGCN: A Graph Convolutional Neural Network for Emotion Recognition in Conversation](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/ghosal-2019-dialoguegcn-graph-convolutional-neural-network/)** *(2019 · 850 citations)* DialogueGCN targets emotion recognition in conversation (ERC). Earlier RNN-based approaches such as DialogueRNN struggle to carry context across distant utterances and do not explicitly encode who said what or where an utterance sits relative to the target. The authors represent each dialogue as a directed graph.…
2. **[MIME: MIMicking Emotions for Empathetic Response Generation](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/majumder-2020-mime-mimicking-emotions-empathetic-response/)** *(2020 · 277 citations)* The paper tackles empathetic response generation in dialogue. The authors argue that earlier systems, such as the state-of-the-art MoEL, treat all emotions as one flat, uniform set. MIME instead assumes that empathetic listeners partly copy the speaker's emotion, and that how much they copy depends on whether that…
3. **[Comparative Approaches to Sentiment Analysis Using Datasets in Major European and Arabic Languages](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/krasitskii-2025-comparative-approaches-sentiment-analysis-using/)** *(2025 · 5 citations)* The paper asks how well three widely used transformer encoders handle sentiment classification across nine typologically different languages: Arabic and Bulgarian, the Uralic pair Hungarian and Finnish, and five Western European languages (Spanish, English, Italian, German and French).
