# Arpit Mittal

Arpit Mittal works on automated fact checking, in particular on verifying natural-language claims against evidence that a system must first locate in Wikipedia. The papers here, from 2018 to 2021, centre on building large annotated resources and shared evaluation campaigns. In these, claims are labelled as supported, refuted or lacking sufficient information, and systems are judged both on the verdict and on the evidence they retrieve.

The most cited of these is [FEVER: a Large-scale Dataset for Fact Extraction and VERification](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/thorne-2018-fever-large-scale-dataset-fact/) (2018). It assembled 185,445 claims drawn from the opening sections of Wikipedia articles. Many of the claims were altered through mutations such as negation or entity substitution, and annotators marked the sentences that justify each verdict. The companion [FEVER shared task](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/thorne-2018-fact-extraction-verification-fever-shared/) paper from the same year reported a competition built on this dataset. Its metric gives credit for a correct label only when a complete evidence set comes with it, and evidence found by participating systems was used to fill gaps in the gold annotations.

The newest work, [the FEVEROUS shared task](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/aly-2021-fact-extraction-verification-over-unstructured/) (2021), moves verification beyond plain sentences to evidence that mixes text with tables, lists and other structured parts of Wikipedia pages. It also uses longer claims and asks for partial evidence even when a claim is judged to have too little information. Mittal is currently affiliated with the University of Southern California. Earlier bylines include Amazon in the United States and the United Kingdom, the University of Cambridge and Meta. 1. **[FEVER: a Large-scale Dataset for Fact Extraction and VERification](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/thorne-2018-fever-large-scale-dataset-fact/)** *(2018 · 2 205 citations)* Before FEVER, datasets for automated fact checking held only a few hundred claims. Many of them also handed systems the source text instead of making them find it. FEVER provides 185,445 claims built from the introductory sections of about 50,000 popular Wikipedia pages (June 2017 dump). Annotators wrote short…
2. **[The Fact Extraction and VERification (FEVER) Shared Task](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/thorne-2018-fact-extraction-verification-fever-shared/)** *(2018 · 322 citations)* The FEVER shared task targets automatic claim verification, which complements information extraction: instead of only pulling facts out of text, a system must check whether a statement holds.
3. **[The Fact Extraction and VERification Over Unstructured and Structured information (FEVEROUS) Shared Task](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/aly-2021-fact-extraction-verification-over-unstructured/)** *(2021 · 178 citations)* The FEVEROUS shared task, held at the FEVER 2021 workshop, extends automated fact checking from purely textual evidence to a mix of text and structured Wikipedia content such as tables and lists.
