# Deniz Yuret

Deniz Yuret works in natural language processing. The papers here, from 2007 to 2020, build and evaluate systems that must handle many languages at once, among them Turkish, Arabic and Greek. They take up two problems: [dependency parsing](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/topics/dependency-parsing/) learned from annotated treebanks, and the classification of short social-media posts with pretrained neural encoders. Both are set as shared-task evaluations, where systems are compared under common rules. The work touches on [multilingual and cross-lingual NLP](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/topics/multilingual-nlp/) and on [Semitic languages](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/topics/semitic-languages/).

The most cited paper here is [The CoNLL 2007 Shared Task on Dependency Parsing](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/nivre-2007-conll-2007-shared-task-dependency/) (2007), the overview of a shared task that extended the 2006 edition. Its multilingual track asked one parser to learn from treebanks in ten typologically varied languages. A second track trained on Wall Street Journal text and then parsed English from other domains, with no labelled examples from those domains. The organisers converted the treebanks into one common column format and capped training sizes so that comparisons stayed fair. Its findings suggest that differences in annotation guidelines can outweigh differences in language when scoring a new domain.

The more recent paper, [KUISAIL at SemEval-2020 Task 12](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/safaya-2020-kuisail-semeval-2020-task-12/) (2020), turns to spotting offensive tweets in Arabic, Greek and Turkish. Its BERT-CNN system feeds the top four hidden layers of a language-specific BERT into a convolutional classifier as separate channels, with filters one to five tokens wide. Because no Arabic BERT was available, the team pretrained ArabicBERT in four sizes on web text that included dialects, and released it.

Yuret's current affiliation is Koç University in Istanbul, which appears on bylines from 2004 onward. Earlier bylines name the [Massachusetts Institute of Technology](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/massachusetts-institute-of-technology/), between 1994 and 2007.
