# Dimitris Galanis

Dimitris Galanis works on aspect-based sentiment analysis, the task of finding which parts of a product or service a review discusses and what opinion it expresses about each one. Their papers here, from 2014 to 2016, describe a series of SemEval shared tasks: defining the problem, building annotated review corpora, writing annotation guidelines and setting up the evaluation of participating systems. The recurring question is how to make fine-grained opinion labels consistent enough for annotators to agree on and for systems to be compared fairly.

The most cited of these is [SemEval-2014 Task 4](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/pontiki-2014-semeval-2014-task-4-aspect/), which set out four subtasks over English review sentences about restaurants and laptops. It gave sentences that both praise and criticise the same aspect their own "conflict" label, and it ran a pilot annotation round so that observed disagreements could be turned into further guidelines. The follow-up, [SemEval-2015 Task 12](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/pontiki-2015-semeval-2015-task-12-aspect/), redefined an aspect category as an entity paired with an attribute, both taken from a domain ontology. It joined category, opinion target and polarity into a single tuple, limited "neutral" to mild opinions and removed the "conflict" label.

The latest paper here, [SemEval-2016 Task 5](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/pontiki-2016-semeval-2016-task-5-aspect/), takes the 2015 framework beyond English and beyond single sentences. It added Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, French, Russian, Spanish and Turkish, together with new domains such as cameras, phones, museums and telecom tweets. A new review-level subtask built its labels from sentence-level annotations by choosing the dominant sentiment. Separate constrained and unconstrained tracks were meant to show whether gains came from better models or from extra lexicons and data.

Galanis is at the Institute for Language and Speech Processing and the Athena Research and Innovation Center in Marousi, Greece.
