# Ekaterina Shutova

Ekaterina Shutova works in natural language processing on figurative language, above all metaphor. Their papers here ask how metaphorical uses of words can be detected automatically, how they can be annotated in corpora, and how they connect to emotion, framing and the goals of speakers. The methods range from unsupervised clustering over parsed text to word embeddings combined with image features, crowdsourced ratings and annotation schemes. A broader survey also considers linguistic typology as a resource for multilingual systems.

The most cited work here, [Black Holes and White Rabbits](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/shutova-2016-black-holes-white-rabbits-metaphor/) (2016), classified short verb and adjective phrases as literal or metaphorical. It did so by pairing skip-gram text vectors with visual vectors taken from image search results, with no trained classifier. The same year, [Metaphor as a Medium for Emotion](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/mohammad-2016-metaphor-as-medium-emotion-empirical/) used crowd judgements of verb senses to test whether metaphorical uses express more feeling than literal ones. Two 2010 papers set out earlier groundwork. One grew a small set of seed metaphors from the British National Corpus into many new examples through verb and noun clustering. The other, written with [Simone Teufel](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/authors/simone-teufel/), proposed a procedure for marking source and target domains of verb metaphors.

More recent work moves from identifying metaphors toward explaining their use. [The Pragmatics behind Politics](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/cabot-2020-pragmatics-behind-politics-modelling-metaphor/) (2020) examined whether models of political text improve when they are taught about metaphor and emotion. A 2026 paper, [A framework for annotating and modelling intentions behind metaphor use](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/michelli-2026-framework-annotating-modelling-intentions-behind/), builds a nine-category taxonomy of communicative intentions. It applies the taxonomy to examples from the VU Amsterdam Metaphor Corpus and evaluates large language models on the resulting dataset.

Shutova is based at the University of Amsterdam, with papers from 2018 onward. Earlier bylines include the University of Cambridge (2009–2019), the University of California, Berkeley (2012–2017) and Meta in London (2021–2022). Co-authors include [Anna Korhonen](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/authors/anna-korhonen/) and [Edoardo Maria Ponti](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/authors/edoardo-maria-ponti/), who led the 2019 survey on typology for NLP. The papers here fall mainly under [Idioms & multiword expressions](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/topics/multiword-expressions/).

The most cited first (OpenAlex and our library).

1. **[Black Holes and White Rabbits: Metaphor Identification with Visual Features](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/shutova-2016-black-holes-white-rabbits-metaphor/)** *(2016 · 292 citations)* The paper addresses automatic metaphor identification: deciding whether short phrases (verb–subject, verb–direct object, adjective–noun) are used literally or metaphorically.
2. **[Metaphor as a Medium for Emotion: An Empirical Study](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/mohammad-2016-metaphor-as-medium-emotion-empirical/)** *(2016 · 285 citations)* People often assume that metaphors carry more feeling than plain wording, but no one had measured this or shown where a metaphor's emotional charge comes from.
3. **[Metaphor Identification Using Verb and Noun Clustering](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/shutova-2010-metaphor-identification-verb-noun-clustering/)** *(2010 · 250 citations)* The paper addresses automatic detection of metaphorical language in unrestricted text, specifically verbs used figuratively with a subject or direct object.
4. **[Modeling Language Variation and Universals: A Survey on Typological Linguistics for Natural Language Processing](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/ponti-2019-modeling-language-variation-universals-survey/)** *(2019 · 217 citations)* Most NLP systems still work well only for a small set of well-resourced languages. They depend on labeled data, and their design often contains hidden assumptions tied to particular languages. Ponti et al. examine whether linguistic typology can help close this gap. Typology is the systematic study of how the world's…
5. **[Metaphor Corpus Annotated for Source - Target Domain Mappings](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/shutova-2010-metaphor-corpus-annotated-source-target/)** *(2010 · 164 citations)* The paper addresses a gap in metaphor annotation. Most theories treat metaphor as one conceptual domain (target) being understood through another (source), yet no systematic procedure existed for annotating these cross-domain mappings in text. Shutova and Teufel propose such a scheme for single-word metaphors…
6. **[The Pragmatics behind Politics: Modelling Metaphor, Framing and Emotion in Political Discourse](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/cabot-2020-pragmatics-behind-politics-modelling-metaphor/)** *(2020 · 64 citations)* Social science has long argued that political actors rely on metaphor and emotional appeals to persuade. Computational models of political text, however, had not taken either phenomenon into account. This paper asks whether explicitly teaching a model about metaphor and emotion improves its analysis of political…
7. **[A framework for annotating and modelling intentions behind metaphor use](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/michelli-2026-framework-annotating-modelling-intentions-behind/)** *(2026 · 1 citation)* Metaphors often serve communicative goals, such as stirring emotions, persuading, or making abstract ideas easier to grasp.
