# Gabor Angeli

Gabor Angeli works on natural language processing problems that connect free text with structured representations of facts. Their papers here, from 2010 to 2015, run in two directions: turning database records into fluent descriptions, and pulling relation triples out of unrestricted text. Both rely on statistical classifiers guided by explicit linguistic or structural cues rather than large sets of hand-built rules or learned patterns. The work sits within [information extraction](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/topics/information-extraction/) and data-to-text generation.

The most cited paper here is [Leveraging Linguistic Structure For Open Domain Information Extraction](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/angeli-2015-leveraging-linguistic-structure-open-domain/) (2015). It approaches open IE by having a classifier walk a sentence's dependency tree and break it into short independent clauses. That classifier is trained by distant supervision from known KBP relations. Natural logic then trims each clause, but only where the shortened version is still entailed. The aim is to outperform pattern-based systems such as Ollie on text from unfamiliar domains and on long-distance syntactic links. The earlier [A Simple Domain-Independent Probabilistic Approach to Generation](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/angeli-2010-simple-domain-independent-probabilistic-approach/) (2010) treats generation as a cascade of small decisions: first a record, then some of its fields, then a word template. Each step is handled by a log-linear classifier whose features can see every earlier choice, and the templates are mined from automatically aligned text instead of written by hand.

Taken in order, the papers here move from producing language out of structured data toward recovering structured data from language, with dependency syntax and logical entailment playing a growing role. Angeli's papers from 2012 to 2017 carry a [Stanford University](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/stanford-university/) affiliation. The 2010 generation paper was written with [Percy Liang](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/authors/percy-liang/) and [Dan Klein](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/authors/dan-klein/), and [Christopher D. Manning](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/authors/christopher-d-manning/) also appears among the co-authors of the papers here.
