# Hany Hassan

Hany Hassan works on machine translation. The papers here look at neural translation systems, at how they can serve languages with very little training data, and at how claims about translation quality should be tested. The methods include attentional encoder-decoder models, multilingual training that shares information across languages, and human evaluation by bilingual judges.

The most cited paper here is [Achieving Human Parity on Automatic Chinese to English News Translation](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/hassan-2018-achieving-human-parity-automatic-chinese/) (2018). It begins by turning the question of whether a system can equal professional translators into something that can be checked. Parity is reached when bilingual raters judge machine output and professional renderings of one shared test set and their scores show no statistically significant difference. The paper argues that reference-based metrics such as BLEU can punish acceptable alternative phrasings and that references themselves are often unreliable, so it relies on source-based direct assessment instead. It then describes [Microsoft](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/companies/microsoft/)'s Chinese-to-English neural system. The second paper, [Universal Neural Machine Translation for Extremely Low Resource Languages](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/gu-2018-universal-neural-machine-translation-extremely/) (2018), addresses languages where parallel text is scarce, sometimes limited to a handful of thousands of sentence pairs and sometimes absent entirely. It extends an existing multilingual setup that translates several languages into English by adding two mechanisms for sharing across languages.

Both papers here date from 2018. Together they point in two directions: careful human-centred [evaluation](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/topics/evaluation-benchmarks/) of strong systems, and extending neural translation to [low-resource languages](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/topics/low-resource-languages/). Hassan's current affiliation is Microsoft in Redmond, with bylines from 2011 to 2024. Earlier papers list IBM in Giza, Egypt, from 2003 to 2009, and [Dublin City University](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/dublin-city-university/) from 2006 to 2008. ## Papers

The most cited first (OpenAlex and our library).

1. **[Achieving Human Parity on Automatic Chinese to English News Translation](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/hassan-2018-achieving-human-parity-automatic-chinese/)** *(2018 · 794 citations)* The paper asks whether machine translation can match professional human translators, and first makes that question testable.
2. **[Universal Neural Machine Translation for Extremely Low Resource Languages](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/gu-2018-universal-neural-machine-translation-extremely/)** *(2018 · 356 citations)* Neural machine translation usually depends on millions of sentence pairs, so it performs poorly for languages with only a few thousand parallel sentences or none at all.
