# Ian Reid

Ian Reid's papers here sit where computer vision, natural language and robotics meet, in the area of [Vision & language](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/topics/multimodal/). The recurring question is how an embodied agent can follow spoken or written route instructions inside buildings it has never visited. The methods range from building simulators and crowdsourced benchmarks to testing large language models as navigation planners.

The most cited of these papers is [Vision-and-Language Navigation](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/anderson-2017-vision-language-navigation-interpreting-visually/) (2017), written with [Peter Anderson](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/authors/peter-anderson/), [Stephen Gould](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/authors/stephen-gould/) and [Mark Johnson](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/authors/mark-johnson/). It framed instruction-following navigation as a task of its own. It introduced the Matterport3D Simulator, a reinforcement learning environment in which an agent moves between viewpoints captured in real panoramic photographs of indoor spaces. It also released the Room-to-Room dataset of human-written route descriptions, which made progress on the task measurable in a reproducible way.

The newer work extends the same benchmark beyond English. [Language and Planning in Robotic Navigation](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/mansour-2025-language-planning-robotic-navigation-multilingual/) (2025) translates the Room-to-Room instructions, scene descriptions and object lists into Arabic. It then compares several language models, including one built around Arabic, as zero-shot planners that reason over text alone. The study separates formatting failures from real planning errors and treats invented viewpoints as their own category of mistake. This connects the navigation work to [Multilingual & cross-lingual NLP](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/topics/multilingual-nlp/) and to [Semitic languages](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/topics/semitic-languages/).

Reid's bylines link the work to the [University of Oxford](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/university-of-oxford/) over a long early period and to The University of Adelaide from 2013 onward. They also include the Australian Centre for Robotic Vision and, in recent years, the [Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/mohamed-bin-zayed-university-of-artificial-intelligence/).

1. **[Vision-and-Language Navigation: Interpreting visually-grounded navigation instructions in real environments](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/anderson-2017-vision-language-navigation-interpreting-visually/)** *(2017 · 1,346 citations)* The authors formulate the Vision-and-Language Navigation (VLN) task. An agent receives an instruction in natural language and must reach a goal in a building it has never seen before, relying only on images from its own camera. To make such a task reproducibly evaluable, they created the Matterport3D Simulator. It is…
2. **[Language and Planning in Robotic Navigation: A Multilingual Evaluation of State-of-the-Art Models](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/mansour-2025-language-planning-robotic-navigation-multilingual/)** *(2025 · 2 citations)* Vision-and-Language Navigation (VLN) research is almost entirely English. This paper asks whether language models can plan indoor routes from Arabic instructions as well as from English ones, and whether an Arabic-centric model helps. The authors machine-translated the R2R dataset into Arabic with the Groq API. The…
