# Jean Maillard

Jean Maillard works in natural language processing. The two papers here address quite different problems: recognising figurative language in short phrases, and evaluating systems that must draw on large stores of factual knowledge. Both rely on Wikipedia, either as training text for word and phrase embeddings or as a shared corpus for checking answers and their supporting evidence. The work falls under [Idioms & multiword expressions](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/topics/multiword-expressions/) and [Evaluation & benchmarks](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/topics/evaluation-benchmarks/).

The earlier paper, [Black Holes and White Rabbits](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/shutova-2016-black-holes-white-rabbits-metaphor/) (2016), treats metaphor detection in verb–subject, verb–object and adjective–noun pairs as a multimodal problem. It pairs skip-gram text vectors with image features that a pretrained CNN extracts from search-engine pictures. A phrase is flagged as metaphorical when the vectors of its parts fail to match, so no classifier needs to be trained. The newest and most cited work, [KILT](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/petroni-2020-kilt-benchmark-knowledge-intensive-language/) (2020), moves toward knowledge-intensive tasks. It maps eleven existing datasets, spanning five task types such as open-domain question answering, fact checking and entity linking, onto one Wikipedia snapshot in a common format. Systems can then be scored on their outputs and also on whether they retrieve the right supporting passages.

Maillard is currently affiliated with Meta in Menlo Park, after earlier papers from Meta's London office and a series of bylines at the University of Cambridge between 2014 and 2020.
