# Jelena Mitrović

Jelena Mitrović works in natural language processing, with papers here centred on the automatic detection of abusive and offensive language on social media. The recurring questions concern what existing datasets actually capture, how overt or subtle abusive messages are, and how general-purpose language models can be adjusted to handle hostile online text. The methods combine corpus building, new annotation of established resources, and continued training of pretrained models.

The most cited of these papers is [HateBERT: Retraining BERT for Abusive Language Detection in English](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/caselli-2021-hatebert-retraining-bert-abusive-language/). It assembles a corpus of English Reddit comments taken from communities the platform banned for harassment, hate or violence. It then continues masked language model training of BERT on that text, producing a version of the model adapted to abusive language. The paper also reads cross-dataset results in terms of how broad or narrow each dataset's annotated phenomenon is. The second, [I Feel Offended, Don't Be Abusive!](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/caselli-2020-i-feel-offended-don-t/), takes a typology that sorts abuse by its target and its explicitness. It applies that typology to the OLID/OffensEval Twitter corpus by adding a layer that separates explicit from implicit messages, along with distinct guidelines for abuse. It also uses lexicon-based scores and a trivial word-matching classifier to test whether a dataset rewards surface vocabulary.

Taken in order, the papers here move from the 2020 re-annotation study to the 2021 model-adaptation work. The direction runs from examining what labels in existing corpora miss toward building resources and models suited to the domain. Both papers were written with [Tommaso Caselli](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/authors/tommaso-caselli/), [Valerio Basile](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/authors/valerio-basile/) and [Michael Granitzer](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/authors/michael-granitzer/). Mitrović is currently affiliated with the [University of Passau](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/university-of-passau/) and with the Istraživačko-razvojni institut za veštačku inteligenciju Srbije in Novi Sad, and was earlier at the University of Belgrade.

## Papers

The most cited first (OpenAlex and our library).

1. **[HateBERT: Retraining BERT for Abusive Language Detection in English](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/caselli-2021-hatebert-retraining-bert-abusive-language/)** *(2021 · 481 citations)* General-purpose BERT is trained mostly on standard, neutral text, which limits it on social-media abusive language.
2. **[I Feel Offended, Don't Be Abusive! Implicit/Explicit Messages in Offensive and Abusive Language](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/caselli-2020-i-feel-offended-don-t/)** *(2020 · 157 citations)* Automatic detection of abusive language remains difficult, partly because existing datasets rarely record how overtly a message is abusive.
