# Jian Yin

Jian Yin's papers here, published between 2020 and 2022, apply pre-trained Transformer networks to two kinds of material: program source code and natural-language claims that need checking against evidence. A shared question runs through both. Each asks how explicit structure, whether the switching of a model between attention modes or the semantic relations that tie sentences together, can be built into a large pretrained model. The work falls under [language models and pretraining](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/topics/language-models/), [reasoning](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/topics/reasoning/), and [code and programming languages](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/topics/code-and-programming/).

The more widely cited of the two is [UniXcoder](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/guo-2022-unixcoder-unified-cross-modal-pre/) (2022). It starts from the observation that encoder-only, decoder-only and encoder-decoder code models each struggle with some class of task. It then trains a single multi-layer Transformer that moves among all three configurations, using mask attention matrices together with prefix adapters. One model can therefore handle both code understanding and generation, including completion run in decoder-only fashion. The earlier paper, [Reasoning Over Semantic-Level Graph for Fact Checking](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/zhong-2020-reasoning-over-semantic-level-graph/) (2020), deals with claims whose supporting or refuting evidence is spread over several sentences. It parses that evidence with semantic role labeling into a graph of verbs, arguments, and time and place phrases. Overlapping phrases are linked across tuples, and the graph structure is fed into XLNet. Taken in order, the two papers show a shift from verifying text toward representing code.

Yin's current institution is [Sun Yat-sen University](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/sun-yat-sen-university/) in Guangzhou, where bylines go back to 2005. [Microsoft Research Asia](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/companies/microsoft-research-asia/) in Beijing also appears on papers from 2020 to 2022. Frequent co-authors include [Ming Zhou](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/authors/ming-zhou/) and [Nan Duan](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/authors/nan-duan/), with two shared papers each, alongside Daya Guo, Wanjun Zhong, Duyu Tang, Jingjing Xu, Shuai Lu and Yanlin Wang.

Encoder-only models need a decoder trained from scratch to generate text or code. Decoder-only models are weaker at understanding tasks. Encoder-decoder models are inefficient for code completion, which in practice should run…
