# Justin Harris

Justin Harris works on building language resources for natural language processing. Their papers here centre on two kinds of corpus: question-answering data for machine comprehension and annotated conversations for goal-oriented dialogue. Both projects gather language from crowd workers or human participants. In each, the collection process is designed so that the resulting data poses problems that earlier benchmarks left out.

The more widely cited of the two is [NewsQA](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/trischler-2017-newsqa-machine-comprehension-dataset/) (2017), a span-extraction dataset of 119,633 questions about 12,744 CNN articles. Question writers saw only headlines and highlights, so their questions tend to reword the source text and sometimes cannot be answered from it at all. Other workers then located answers in the full articles, and a validation step resolved disagreements. The second, [Frames](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/asri-2017-frames-corpus-adding-memory-goal/) (2017), collects 1369 human-to-human travel-booking conversations recorded in a Wizard-of-Oz setting. In these conversations, users compare packages and return to earlier options. The corpus is annotated with dialogue acts, slots and values to support systems that must keep track of several sets of preferences at once.

Both papers date from 2017 and point in the same direction. They move past simple, linear task formats toward data that requires memory, paraphrase and the handling of unanswerable questions. Harris is affiliated with [Microsoft Research Montréal](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/companies/microsoft-research-montreal/). [Kaheer Suleman](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/authors/kaheer-suleman/) is a co-author on both papers.
