# Parinaz Sobhani

Parinaz Sobhani works on stance detection in social media text: working out, from a short post, whether its author supports or opposes a given target. Sobhani's papers here centre on tweets about public figures and issues. They build labelled collections through crowdsourced annotation, design label schemes that hold up in practice, and test models that infer stance. The work sits within [Sentiment & emotion](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/topics/sentiment-emotion/) research.

The most cited of these papers is [SemEval-2016 Task 6: Detecting Stance in Tweets](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/mohammad-2016-semeval-2016-task-6-detecting/) (2016). It set up a shared evaluation in which systems label a tweet as favouring, opposing or neither toward a predefined target. The accompanying corpus has 4,870 English tweets across six targets familiar to a US audience. Tweets were gathered with stance-bearing hashtags, which were then deleted so that systems could not rely on them as easy clues. The task also merged a nearly empty neutral class into a broader "no inferable stance" category. A year later, [A Dataset for Multi-Target Stance Detection](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/sobhani-2017-dataset-multi-target-stance-detection/) (2017) moved beyond judging one target at a time. It released 4,455 tweets from the 2016 US presidential campaign, each annotated for stance toward two candidates together, along with a larger set of unlabelled election tweets.

The newer work turns to the way opinions about related targets, such as rival candidates, depend on one another. It treats joint stance prediction as a sequence-to-sequence problem with a bidirectional GRU encoder. Between 2015 and 2018 Sobhani's papers carry a University of Ottawa affiliation. Given a tweet and a pre-chosen target, a system must decide whether the author is in favor, against, or neither. 2. **[A Dataset for Multi-Target Stance Detection](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/sobhani-2017-dataset-multi-target-stance-detection/)** *(2017 · 190 citations)* Most stance classifiers judge an author's position toward each target separately. However, attitudes toward related targets often depend on each other, such as rival candidates in an election. Sobhani, Inkpen and Zhu address this gap with the Multi-Target Stance Dataset. It contains 4,455 tweets about the 2016 US…
