# Raymond Mooney

Raymond Mooney works on natural language processing, with papers here spanning 2005 to 2021. A recurring question is how to connect text to structured meaning: mapping sentences to logical forms, generating sentences back from such forms, extracting relations between entities, and representing the senses of words. The methods are largely statistical and learned from annotated examples, drawing on dependency parses, kernel methods, synchronous grammars borrowed from [machine translation](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/topics/machine-translation/), and clustering of word contexts. More recent work also builds datasets for evaluating reasoning over stories.

The most cited of these papers, [A Shortest Path Dependency Kernel for Relation Extraction](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/bunescu-2005-shortest-path-dependency-kernel-relation/) (2005), decides whether two named entities in a sentence are related by looking only at the dependency path that joins them. It generalises each word on that path to its part of speech and broader classes, and an SVM compares the resulting patterns. [Multi-Prototype Vector-Space Models of Word Meaning](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/reisinger-2010-multi-prototype-vector-space-models/) (2010) gives an ambiguous word several vectors instead of one by clustering its occurrences in a corpus. Two papers from 2007 extend the WASP framework for [semantic parsing](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/topics/semantic-parsing/). [Learning Synchronous Grammars for Semantic Parsing with Lambda Calculus](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/wong-2007-learning-synchronous-grammars-semantic-parsing/) uses λ-functions on the meaning side so that logical variables can be handled. A companion study runs the learned rules in reverse to generate text from meaning representations in the RoboCup and GeoQuery domains.

The newest paper here, [TellMeWhy](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/lal-2021-tellmewhy-dataset-answering-why-questions/) (2021), turns to narrative understanding. It collects over thirty thousand template-generated why-questions about characters' actions in short five-sentence stories. Crowd workers answered each question and noted whether the answer was stated in the story or had to be inferred.

Mooney has been affiliated with The University of Texas at Austin since 1988, after earlier papers from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign between 1985 and 1990. 1. **[A Shortest Path Dependency Kernel for Relation Extraction](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/bunescu-2005-shortest-path-dependency-kernel-relation/)** *(2005 · 1 173 citations)* The paper tackles relation extraction: deciding whether, and how, two named entities in one sentence are related.
2. **[Multi-Prototype Vector-Space Models of Word Meaning](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/reisinger-2010-multi-prototype-vector-space-models/)** *(2010 · 489 citations)* Standard distributional models give each word type one centroid vector. Such a vector cannot represent ambiguous words: club resembles both bat and association , but those two words are unrelated. Reisinger and Mooney propose a multi-prototype alternative. For each word, its corpus occurrences are clustered with a…
3. **[Learning Synchronous Grammars for Semantic Parsing with Lambda Calculus](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/wong-2007-learning-synchronous-grammars-semantic-parsing/)** *(2007 · 464 citations)* Learned synchronous grammars had only been applied to semantic parsing for meaning languages without logical variables.
4. **[Generation by Inverting a Semantic Parser that Uses Statistical Machine Translation](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/wong-2007-generation-inverting-semantic-parser-that/)** *(2007 · 134 citations)* Generation from meaning representations (RoboCup coach advice and GeoQuery database queries) is treated as the inverse of semantic parsing.
5. **[TellMeWhy: A Dataset for Answering Why-Questions in Narratives](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/lal-2021-tellmewhy-dataset-answering-why-questions/)** *(2021 · 53 citations)* TellMeWhy has 30,519 why-questions about the actions of characters in 9,636 five-sentence ROCStories, generated by templates from dependency parses («Why did {subject} {verb} {object}?») and answered by three crowd workers each, who start from a prompt «{subject} {verb} {object} because…», mark the sentences that…
