# Razvan Bunescu

Razvan Bunescu works in natural language processing, with a focus on turning unstructured text into structured information. The papers here, from 2005 and 2006, fall within [information extraction](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/topics/information-extraction/) and [named entity recognition](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/topics/named-entity-recognition/). They ask which entities a piece of text mentions, what those mentions actually refer to, and how two entities in a sentence are related. Both rely on kernel methods with support vector machines, applied to dependency parses in one case and to Wikipedia in the other.

[A Shortest Path Dependency Kernel for Relation Extraction](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/bunescu-2005-shortest-path-dependency-kernel-relation/) (2005) argues that the syntactic evidence for a relation between two entities lies almost entirely on the shortest route joining them in the dependency graph. Each word along that route is generalized to its part-of-speech tag, a broader word class or an entity type, and an SVM compares the resulting paths. Negation is also marked directly on the path. [Using Encyclopedic Knowledge for Named Entity Disambiguation](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/bunescu-2006-encyclopedic-knowledge-named-entity-disambiguation/) (2006) is the newer of the two. It shifts from relations between entities to resolving the entities themselves. The paper assembles a name dictionary from Wikipedia titles, redirects and disambiguation pages, and treats hyperlinks as training examples that come labeled for free. A ranking SVM then ties context words to Wikipedia categories, so that an ambiguous name in a web query, such as "John Williams", can be matched to the intended person.

Bunescu is at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Earlier bylines list Ohio University (2008–2021) and The University of Texas at Austin (2002–2007). Given a proper name in context, the system decides whether it refers to an entity known to a dictionary and, if so, which of the candidates sharing that name is meant. The motivating use case is web search, where queries such as "John…
