# Richard Eckart de Castilho

Richard Eckart de Castilho works on software for annotating text, the tools that create the labelled training material statistical natural language processing relies on. Their papers here describe open-source platforms that run in the web browser. These platforms let distributed teams mark up documents, compare their judgments and merge the results, with growing support from machine learning and knowledge resources.

The most cited of these papers is [The INCEpTION Platform](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/klie-2018-inception-platform-machine-assisted-knowledge/) (2018). It addresses semantic tasks such as entity linking, fact linking and knowledge base population, which are slow and demand familiarity with the underlying resource. INCEpTION brings three things together in one tool. Several recommenders propose labels, and an advisory form of active learning suggests items to judge while leaving annotators free to edit anything. The tool also manages knowledge bases directly. Finally, its architecture is modular, so external models can run as separate HTTP services. That system builds on the earlier [WebAnno](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/yimam-2013-webanno-flexible-web-based-visually/) (2013). WebAnno paired the brat visualisation front end with a new Java back end. It gave each annotator a private copy for later curation and treated aggregated crowd output as one more annotator, so agreement could be measured in the same way for every label.

Read in sequence, the work moves from general distributed annotation toward machine-assisted, knowledge-oriented annotation of meaning. The papers carry affiliations with [Technische Universität Darmstadt](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/technische-universitat-darmstadt/) over a long span and, more recently, with the [Hessian Center for Artificial Intelligence](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/labs/hessian-center-for-artificial-intelligence/).
