# Ruty Rinott

Ruty Rinott works in natural language processing, and both papers here centre on building evaluation resources from Wikipedia text and defining tasks around them. One concerns finding text that supports an argument. The other concerns answering questions across languages, linking the work to [question answering](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/topics/question-answering/) and [multilingual and cross-lingual NLP](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/topics/multilingual-nlp/). The method repeats across both: careful multi-stage annotation by people produces a benchmark, which then supports either a supervised system or a cross-language comparison of models.

The earlier paper, [Show Me Your Evidence](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/rinott-2015-show-me-your-evidence-automatic/) (2015), set out the task of context dependent evidence detection. Given a debate topic and a claim, a system must find short, well-formed passages in related documents that back the claim, sorting them as study, expert or anecdotal evidence. The authors assembled a benchmark from 547 Wikipedia articles on 58 Debatabase topics. Labels were gathered in two rounds, with one group of annotators proposing candidate spans and a second group accepting or rejecting them. Their pipeline first judges whether a span reads as evidence at all and only then whether it suits the particular claim. It also weighs the span's section header and the titles of the sources it cites.

The later and more widely cited paper, [MLQA](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/lewis-2019-mlqa-evaluating-cross-lingual-extractive/) (2019), turns to extractive question answering beyond English. It provides an evaluation-only benchmark in seven languages: English, Arabic, Hindi, German, Vietnamese, Spanish and simplified Chinese. The benchmark was built by aligning Wikipedia sentences that share a meaning across languages and having crowd-workers pose English questions answered within those sentences. Professional translators then carried the questions into the other languages. 2. **[Show Me Your Evidence - an Automatic Method for Context Dependent Evidence Detection](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/rinott-2015-show-me-your-evidence-automatic/)** *(2015 · 296 citations)* The paper introduces Context Dependent Evidence Detection (CDED). Given a debate topic, a claim, and related documents, the goal is to locate short, well-formed text segments that back the claim within that topic. The authors separate three evidence types: Study, Expert, and Anecdotal. They built a benchmark from 547…
