# Shamsuddeen Hassan Muhammad

Shamsuddeen Hassan Muhammad works on natural language processing for African languages, especially on building annotated resources where little labelled data exists. Their papers here centre on sentiment analysis of social-media text, named entity recognition, machine translation and speech recognition. The usual approach pairs new human-labelled datasets with baselines from fine-tuned multilingual models. Recurring concerns include code-mixed and noisy text, transfer between languages, and involving native speakers in creating data. The work sits mainly within [Low-resource languages](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/topics/low-resource-languages/) and [Sentiment & emotion](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/topics/sentiment-emotion/).

The most cited paper is [Participatory Research for Low-resourced Machine Translation](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/nekoto-2020-participatory-research-low-resourced-machine/) (2020). It is a case study carried out through the Masakhane community. It argues that the translation gap for African languages stems from historical and social inequities, not only from missing data. It proposes that speakers themselves build datasets, train systems and judge the output. MasakhaNER 2.0 (2022) extended a human-annotated news corpus for entity recognition to a wide range of Sub-Saharan languages. It also examined which source languages best support cross-lingual transfer. [NaijaSenti](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/muhammad-2022-naijasenti-nigerian-twitter-sentiment-corpus/) (2022) gathered large numbers of tweets, many of them code-mixed, and had people label their sentiment in four Nigerian languages, among them Hausa and Nigerian Pidgin. AfriSenti (2023) widened that effort into a benchmark spanning several African language families.

More recent papers turn toward speech and explainability. Whispering in Amharic (2025) adapts a small Whisper checkpoint to Amharic, training on combinations of public speech corpora that include a noisy collection. [SAINT](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/yimam-2026-saint-multilingual-span-level-interpretability/) (2026) offers sentiment data in four languages, Amharic and Hausa among them, with word-level annotations. It is used to compare which tokens fine-tuned encoders and prompted large language models rely on.

Muhammad is based at [Imperial College London](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/imperial-college-london/), holding an advanced research fellowship in computer science from 2024. Muhammad is also at [Bayero University Kano](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/bayero-university-kano/), where papers are bylined from 2017 onward. Between 2020 and 2023 the work was carried out at [Universidade do Porto](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/universidade-do-porto/) and [INESC TEC](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/labs/inesc-tec/). ## Papers

The most cited first (OpenAlex and our library).

1. **[Participatory Research for Low-resourced Machine Translation: A Case Study in African Languages](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/nekoto-2020-participatory-research-low-resourced-machine/)** *(2020 · 333 citations)* Machine translation still serves mainly a handful of well-resourced languages. The authors argue that the gap for African languages reflects social and historical inequities as well as a shortage of data, so MT researchers cannot close it alone. They map the MT pipeline onto roles (content creators, translators…
2. **[MasakhaNER 2.0: Africa-centric Transfer Learning for Named Entity Recognition](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/adelani-2022-masakhaner-2-0-africa-centric/)** *(2022 · 150 citations)* African languages have over a billion speakers but very few annotated NER resources, and it is unclear which source language to use when transferring models across languages.
3. **[AfriSenti: A Twitter Sentiment Analysis Benchmark for African Languages](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/muhammad-2023-afrisenti-twitter-sentiment-analysis-benchmark/)** *(2023 · 143 citations)* NLP research on African languages is scarce, largely because labelled data is lacking. This is especially true for sentiment in noisy social-media text, where code-switching, tone and multiple scripts complicate analysis. The authors address this gap with AfriSenti, a Twitter benchmark covering 14 African languages…
4. **[NaijaSenti: A Nigerian Twitter Sentiment Corpus for Multilingual Sentiment Analysis](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/muhammad-2022-naijasenti-nigerian-twitter-sentiment-corpus/)** *(2022 · 127 citations)* Sentiment analysis tools are mostly built for data-rich languages, so Nigerian languages have had little support.
5. **[Whispering in Amharic: Fine-tuning Whisper for Low-resource Language](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/gete-2025-whispering-amharic-fine-tuning-whisper/)** *(2025 · 2 citations)* Whisper performs poorly on Amharic because the language makes up only a tiny part of its multilingual training data.
6. **[SAINT: Multilingual Span-Level Interpretability for Sentiment Analysis](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/yimam-2026-saint-multilingual-span-level-interpretability/)** *(2026)* Sentiment classifiers are widely deployed, but their decisions are rarely checked for explainability, especially in under-resourced languages.
