# Simone Paolo Ponzetto

Simone Paolo Ponzetto works in natural language processing. Most of the papers here concern [coreference resolution](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/topics/coreference-resolution/), the task of deciding which expressions in a text point to the same entity. A recurring question is whether semantic knowledge can help machine-learned resolvers get past shallow cues such as string overlap and sentence distance. That knowledge includes WordNet similarity, relatedness drawn from the Wikipedia category graph, and predicate–argument structure from [semantic role labeling](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/topics/semantic-role-labeling/). Other work applies neural sequence models to text simplification and builds annotated German corpora.

The most cited paper here, [Exploring Neural Text Simplification Models](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/nisioi-2017-exploring-neural-text-simplification-models/) (2017), borrows encoder-decoder architectures from machine translation to rewrite sentences in simpler form. It trains an attention-based LSTM on aligned sentences from English Wikipedia and Simple English Wikipedia, then reranks beam outputs by SARI or BLEU. [Exploiting Semantic Role Labeling, WordNet and Wikipedia for Coreference Resolution](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/ponzetto-2006-exploiting-semantic-role-labeling-wordnet/) (2006) adds taxonomy-based, encyclopedic and role-based features to a pairwise maximum entropy classifier, and a companion paper from the same year tests role labels on their own. [BART: A Modular Toolkit for Coreference Resolution](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/versley-2008-bart-modular-toolkit-coreference-resolution/) (2008), developed at the Johns Hopkins Summer Workshop 2007, offers an open-source system that runs from raw text to entity chains. Papers from 2010 carry it over to German and Italian for SemEval-2010.

The newest paper here, [GePaDeSE](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/schlenker-2026-gepadese-new-resource-clause-level/) (2026), turns to clause-level aspect in political language. It presents a corpus of 250 German Bundestag speeches whose clauses are tagged with situation entity types such as State, Event, Generic and Proposition. The resource targets German, where such annotation has been scarce.

Ponzetto has been at the [University of Mannheim](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/university-of-mannheim/) since 2013. Earlier papers came from [Heidelberg University](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/heidelberg-university/) and the [European Media Laboratory](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/companies/european-media-laboratory/) in Heidelberg, and a number of papers also list [Sapienza University of Rome](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/sapienza-university-of-rome/). Frequent co-authors on the papers here include [Massimo Poesio](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/authors/massimo-poesio/), [Yannick Versley](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/authors/yannick-versley/) and [Michael Strube](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/authors/michael-strube/), mostly on the coreference work.

## Papers

The most cited first (OpenAlex and our library).

1. **[Exploring Neural Text Simplification Models](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/nisioi-2017-exploring-neural-text-simplification-models/)** *(2017 · 353 citations)* The paper investigates whether neural sequence-to-sequence models, borrowed from neural machine translation, can handle automated text simplification (ATS).
2. **[Exploiting Semantic Role Labeling, WordNet and Wikipedia for Coreference Resolution](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/ponzetto-2006-exploiting-semantic-role-labeling-wordnet/)** *(2006 · 346 citations)* This paper tests whether semantic knowledge can improve a machine-learned coreference resolver. Coreference systems at the time mostly used shallow cues such as string match, distance and grammatical form. The authors re-implemented the Soon et al. (2001) pairwise classifier as a Maximum Entropy model (MALLET with a…
3. **[BabelNet: Building a Very Large Multilingual Semantic Network](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/navigli-2010-babelnet-building-very-large-multilingual/)** *(2010 · 201 citations)* The paper addresses the lack of large multilingual lexical-semantic resources. Manually compiled wordnets are expensive to maintain, contain few named entities, and offer weak coverage for most languages. The authors propose BabelNet, a semantic network that is built automatically. It combines lexicographic knowledge…
4. **[BART: A Modular Toolkit for Coreference Resolution](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/versley-2008-bart-modular-toolkit-coreference-resolution/)** *(2008 · 197 citations)* Building a coreference resolver that works end-to-end, from raw text to entity chains, takes substantial engineering.
5. **[BART: A Multilingual Anaphora Resolution System](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/broscheit-2010-bart-multilingual-anaphora-resolution-system/)** *(2010 · 55 citations)* BART is a modular coreference resolution toolkit, first built for English, which the authors adapt to German and Italian for SemEval-2010 task 1.
6. **[Semantic Role Labeling for Coreference Resolution](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/ponzetto-2006-semantic-role-labeling-coreference-resolution/)** *(2006 · 45 citations)* Most machine-learning coreference resolvers depend on surface cues such as string overlap, sentence distance and grammatical form, so they often fail when linking pronouns or common nouns requires semantic knowledge.
7. **[Extending BART to Provide a Coreference Resolution System for German](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/broscheit-2010-extending-bart-provide-coreference-resolution/)** *(2010 · 15 citations)* Supervised coreference resolution has mostly been developed for English. Several strong German systems exist, but none was publicly released, which makes it hard for others to start research on German. The authors address this by adapting the modular BART toolkit to German. They convert version 4 of the TüBa-D/Z…
8. **[GePaDeSE: A New Resource for Clause-Level Aspect in German Parliamentary Debates](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/schlenker-2026-gepadese-new-resource-clause-level/)** *(2026)* Clause-level aspect resources exist mostly for English, and very few cover political language. The authors address this gap for German with GePaDeSE, a corpus of 250 Bundestag speeches (192 speakers, about 222k tokens). It is labeled with Situation Entity (SE) types following Smith (2003), such as State, Event…
