## Papers

The most cited first (OpenAlex and our library).

1. **[CharacterBERT: Reconciling ELMo and BERT for Word-Level Open-Vocabulary Representations From Characters](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/boukkouri-2020-characterbert-reconciling-elmo-bert-word/)** *(2020 · 204 citations)* Since BERT, most Transformer encoders have kept its wordpiece tokenizer, although the architecture does not require it.
2. **[Practical Very Large Scale CRFs](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/lavergne-2010-practical-very-large-scale-crfs/)** *(2010 · 152 citations)* Linear-chain CRFs become expensive as the label set grows. Training and decoding costs rise quadratically with the number of labels, and so does the number of features that look at pairs of neighbouring labels. Practitioners have therefore tended to keep label sets small or prune label-pair features by hand.
