# Veronika Vincze

Veronika Vincze works on manually annotated language resources and the shared evaluation tasks built on them. Their papers here cover three areas: negation and uncertainty in biomedical and encyclopedic text, verbal multiword expressions such as light verb constructions, and coreference in Hungarian. The work typically sets out annotation guidelines, applies them to a corpus, and uses the result to train and compare automatic systems. A 2011 paper on light verb constructions, for example, tests whether detection methods developed for one domain still hold in another.

The most cited work here is [the CoNLL-2010 shared task](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/farkas-2010-conll-2010-shared-task-learning/) on hedge detection. It asked systems to judge each sentence as certain or uncertain, using biological articles and Wikipedia, where vagueness shows up as "weasel" wording. A second task asked systems to locate hedge cues in biological text and mark the span each cue governs. It builds on [the BioScope corpus](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/szarvas-2008-bioscope-corpus-annotation-negation-uncertainty/) from 2008, which annotated negation, speculation and their scope in biomedical writing. BioScope's guidelines tag a cue as the smallest expressive unit and extend its scope to the largest syntactic unit. They also label words by what they mean rather than by their grammatical form.

The later papers turn to [multiword expressions](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/topics/multiword-expressions/). [The 2017 PARSEME shared task](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/savary-2017-parseme-shared-task-automatic-identification/) addressed verbal idioms and similar expressions, which are hard to detect because their parts can be separated, reordered or read literally. They also vary across languages. A follow-up edition in 2018 asked systems to find such expressions in running text. In the same year, [SzegedKoref](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/vincze-2018-szegedkoref-hungarian-coreference-corpus/) added a coreference layer to selected student essays and newspaper articles in the Szeged Treebank. Each link between mentions was classed as pronominal, nominal, adverbial, verbal or derivational.

Vincze's papers carry affiliations with the [University of Szeged](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/university-of-szeged/) and the MTA-SZTE Research Group on Artificial Intelligence in Szeged, as well as the [Hungarian Academy of Sciences](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/government/hungarian-academy-of-sciences/). Co-authors on the uncertainty work include [Richárd Farkas](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/authors/richard-farkas/) and [György Szarvas](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/authors/gyorgy-szarvas/). The PARSEME papers were written with a wider group that includes [Agata Savary](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/authors/agata-savary/) and Carlos Ramisch.

Veronika Vincze has 8 papers in our library, in 2008–2018, most of them on [Idioms & multiword expressions](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/topics/multiword-expressions/), [Discourse analysis](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/topics/discourse-analysis/), [Coreference resolution](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/topics/coreference-resolution/); often with [Richárd Farkas](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/authors/richard-farkas/), [Agata Savary](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/authors/agata-savary/), [Carlos Ramisch](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/authors/carlos-ramisch/).

## Papers

The most cited first (OpenAlex and our library).

1. **[The CoNLL-2010 Shared Task: Learning to Detect Hedges and their Scope in Natural Language Text](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/farkas-2010-conll-2010-shared-task-learning/)** *(2010 · 370 citations)* The CoNLL-2010 Shared Task introduced uncertainty detection as a competition problem. The goal is to separate factual statements from hedged or speculative ones, which matters for information extraction, for example when mining protein-protein interactions. The organizers defined two tasks. Task1 asks for a binary…
2. **[The BioScope corpus: annotation for negation, uncertainty and their scope in biomedical texts](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/szarvas-2008-bioscope-corpus-annotation-negation-uncertainty/)** *(2008 · 240 citations)* The authors tackle a gap in biomedical text mining: systems must tell factual statements apart from negated or speculative ones, but no sizeable public corpus existed for training and evaluating negation and hedge detection or for resolving the scope of those cues.
3. **[The PARSEME Shared Task on Automatic Identification of Verbal Multiword Expressions](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/savary-2017-parseme-shared-task-automatic-identification/)** *(2017 · 205 citations)* Verbal multiword expressions (VMWEs) such as light-verb constructions, idioms and verb-particle combinations are hard to detect automatically.
4. **[Edition 1.1 of the PARSEME Shared Task on Automatic Identification of Verbal Multiword Expressions](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/ramisch-2018-edition-1-1-parseme-shared/)** *(2018 · 124 citations)* Verbal multiword expressions (VMWEs) are idiomatic combinations headed by a verb, such as light verb constructions or verb-particle constructions.
5. **[Weasels, Hedges and Peacocks: Discourse-level Uncertainty in Wikipedia Articles](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/vincze-2013-weasels-hedges-peacocks-discourse-level/)** *(2013 · 40 citations)* Most earlier work on uncertainty detection treated it as a semantic matter, such as modality or speculation.
6. **[Speculation and negation annotation in natural language texts: what the case of BioScope might (not) reveal](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/vincze-2010-speculation-negation-annotation-natural-language/)** *(2010 · 27 citations)* The paper reflects on what building BioScope taught about annotating uncertainty and negation. Information extraction needs to keep factual statements apart from hedged or denied ones, and that requires suitably annotated corpora. BioScope is described as the largest resource with both negation and hedge cues and the…
7. **[SzegedKoref: A Hungarian Coreference Corpus](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/vincze-2018-szegedkoref-hungarian-coreference-corpus/)** *(2018 · 14 citations)* Hungarian had only a small manually annotated coreference dataset (Miháltz, 2012), which was not enough to build machine-learning coreference resolvers.
8. **[Domain-Dependent Detection of Light Verb Constructions](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/nagy-2011-domain-dependent-detection-light-verb/)** *(2011 · 2 citations)* The paper detects light verb constructions (LVCs), such as "take a decision", and checks whether methods built for one domain carry over to another.
