## About

### Profile

This listing gathers the research institutions in [Algeria](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/orgs/country/dz/) whose scientists appear among the papers held in this library. An institution is included once its researchers have written at least two of the papers here, so the list reflects activity as this library captures it, not the whole of Algerian science. Institutions are ordered by how much the work their scientists did there has been cited, and the listing sits inside a wider directory of organisations of [all kinds](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/orgs/) that can be browsed by country and type.

The Algerian institutions on this site are mostly universities, with one dedicated research institute. They are spread across several cities. The capital, Algiers, hosts the largest group. Others are in the north-west, in the eastern high plateaus and further south toward the Sahara. Together they give a small but varied view of where Algerian authors of papers in this library work, from specialised engineering schools to general science and technology universities and regional universities in the interior.

### The institutions and their places

At the head of the list is the [École Nationale Supérieure d'Informatique](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/ecole-nationale-superieure-d-informatique/), a university-level school in Algiers. As its name says, it is an institution devoted to computer science. Among the Algerian institutions here, the work its scientists produced has drawn the most citations, well ahead of the others listed.

Second is the [Amar Telidji University of Laghouat](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/amar-telidji-university-of-laghouat/), a university in Laghouat. Its position near the top comes from the ordering the site uses, which ranks institutions by the cited work of their scientists. Its listed works have been cited a modest amount so far.

The [University of Sciences and Technology Houari Boumediene](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/university-of-sciences-and-technology-houari-boumediene/) follows. It is a second Algiers university, devoted to science and technology. Its scientists' work in this library has received more citations than that of several institutions listed around it.

The [University Ferhat Abbas of Setif](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/university-ferhat-abbas-of-setif/) is based in Sétif. Among the Algerian institutions on this site, its cited work is second only to that of the École Nationale Supérieure d'Informatique. That makes Sétif one of the more visible Algerian research centres in this collection, outside the capital.

The only research institute in the list is the [Centre de Recherche sur l'Information Scientifique et Technique](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/labs/centre-de-recherche-sur-l-information-scientifique-et-technique/) in Algiers. As its name indicates, it is a research centre concerned with scientific and technical information. The work its scientists did there has been cited more than that of several of the universities listed, even though it contributes fewer papers than the institutions at the top.

Two universities in the interior come next. The [Ziane Achour University of Djelfa](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/ziane-achour-university-of-djelfa/) is in Djelfa, and the [University of Ghardaia](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/university-of-ghardaia/) is in Ghardaïa. Each has a small presence among the works here, and the citations to that work are similar for the two. That level is also close to what the Laghouat university has received.

The list closes with the [Université des Sciences et de la Technologie d'Oran Mohamed Boudiaf](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/universite-des-sciences-et-de-la-technologie-d-oran-mohamed-boudiaf/), a science and technology university in Oran. It is the one Algerian institution on this site from the country's north-western coastal region.

### Research strengths

The country listing names institutions but does not set out research topics. Even so, the names of the institutions give some sense of their focus.

Computing and information science stand out. The institution whose work has been cited the most is a national school of informatics. The research institute in the list, also in Algiers, is defined by its concern with scientific and technical information. Both of these institutions are among the more cited Algerian bodies on this site. Readers interested in Algerian work in computing will therefore find these two pages the most useful starting points.

Science and technology more broadly is the declared field of two other universities. One is Houari Boumediene in Algiers and the other is Mohamed Boudiaf in Oran. Both names place these institutions in the engineering and natural-science tradition, as opposed to the humanities or medicine. The remaining universities, in Sétif, Laghouat, Djelfa and Ghardaïa, are general regional universities. Their names do not point to a single field, so their individual pages are the place to learn what their scientists have published in this library.

Any claim about strengths here applies only to the papers in our library. A strong showing in this listing means that the institution's authors appear in this collection and that their papers here have been cited. It does not measure an institution's standing in Algerian or international research as a whole.

### Leading scientists

Individual researchers are not named at the country level. The scientists who wrote the papers behind each institution's place in the list appear on that institution's own page. Readers looking for particular Algerian authors should start from the institution where they work, beginning with the more cited bodies at the top.

### Landmark works

The country listing does not set out individual papers. Its ordering does show where the most cited Algerian work in this library comes from.

The École Nationale Supérieure d'Informatique accounts for by far the largest share of citations among Algerian institutions here. A few of its papers have drawn much more attention than the rest of the Algerian works in our library. The University Ferhat Abbas of Setif and the Centre de Recherche sur l'Information Scientifique et Technique come after it, followed by the University of Sciences and Technology Houari Boumediene. The papers that mattered most for Algeria's presence in this library are therefore likely to be found on these institutions' pages, particularly that of the Algiers school of informatics.

### Collaborations

Partnerships between institutions are not shown at the country level. The geography of the list still suggests some possible ties. Laghouat, Djelfa and Ghardaïa are close to one another, and their universities sit at a similar level of cited work. Their authors may therefore be working in related areas or together, but the country listing alone cannot confirm such ties. Similarly, three of the listed bodies share Algiers as their home, which makes the capital the densest cluster of Algerian research on this site. Co-authorships and partner institutions, where they exist, are recorded on the individual institution pages.

### Over time

Dates are not given in the country listing, so it is not possible to say from this level alone how Algerian work in this library has developed year by year. Each institution's page shows the dates of its papers.

What the listing does show is a spread of activity. One Algiers school stands clearly ahead in citations. Behind it are a handful of institutions, some in the capital and some in Sétif, with a moderate amount of cited work. Finally comes a group of regional universities whose papers here have so far drawn limited citation. As the library adds papers, the membership and order of this list can change. New Algerian institutions may enter once their researchers have two papers on the site, and the relative positions of those already listed may shift as their work is cited.

### Geographic spread

Algiers, the capital, is the main centre in this listing. It is home to the École Nationale Supérieure d'Informatique, the University of Sciences and Technology Houari Boumediene and the Centre de Recherche sur l'Information Scientifique et Technique. Between them, these three account for much of the cited Algerian work in our library.

Beyond the capital, the listing reaches in several directions. Sétif lies to the east. Oran lies to the west on the Mediterranean coast. Laghouat and Djelfa are on the high plateaus to the south, and Ghardaïa is further south still, toward the desert. Research from Algeria in this library is therefore not confined to the coastal cities. Universities in the interior also contribute papers, even if the citations to their work are, for now, more modest than those of the leading Algiers school.
