## About

### Profile

This entry covers France as a home for research on this site. It does not describe a single institution. It gathers the universities, research institutes and companies in France whose scientists wrote more than one of the papers in the library. The list spans two pages and sits within the library's wider directory of [organisations of all kinds](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/orgs/). Its order follows the cited work that scientists produced at each place, so the institutions shown first are those whose papers here have drawn the most attention from later work. The listing continues on a second page with further institutions.

The French entries fall into three kinds: universities, research institutes (many of them laboratories) and, more rarely, companies. Together they show research spread across many cities. The Paris region holds the largest share, and there are clear groups in Lorraine, the Rhône-Alpes area around Grenoble, Toulouse, Le Mans, Avignon, Rennes, Nantes, Marseille and the Sophia Antipolis area near Valbonne. The names of many of these bodies point to computing, digital science and linguistics, which suggests where the French contribution to this library is concentrated.

### How the list is ordered

The list does not follow size or alphabet. It follows the citations gathered by work done at each institution. A body with a small set of much-cited papers can therefore appear above one with a larger but less cited output. Near the top, for example, [Institut national de recherche en sciences et technologies du numérique](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/labs/institut-national-de-recherche-en-sciences-et-technologies-du-numerique/), a research institute based in Le Chesnay-Rocquencourt, is followed by [Le Mans Université](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/le-mans-universite/) and [Université Paris-Saclay](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/universite-paris-saclay/). After them comes the [Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/labs/centre-national-de-la-recherche-scientifique/) in Paris, which has the largest body of works of any French entry on this site and also the largest volume of citations.

The ordering also shows sharp contrasts. [École nationale des ponts et chaussées](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/ecole-nationale-des-ponts-et-chaussees/) in Champs-sur-Marne appears with only a small set of papers, but those papers are well cited. Further down, [Aix-Marseille Université](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/aix-marseille-universite/) in Marseille has a modest group of works whose citations are very many, far more than most institutions listed near it. The list therefore gives a picture of where cited work was done. It does not measure institutional size.

### National research organisations

Several entries are national research bodies rather than single campuses. The Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique has the broadest presence among the works here. Its researchers took part in many papers, and many French laboratories in the list are linked to it in practice, though this entry does not set out those ties. The Institut national de recherche en sciences et technologies du numérique, devoted to digital science and technology, is the first institution shown. It has a substantial body of cited work in the library.

Inserm, a Paris-based research institute whose name places it in health and medical research, appears with a small presence. It is one of the few entries whose name points away from computing and language. The [École des hautes études en sciences sociales](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/labs/ecole-des-hautes-etudes-en-sciences-sociales/) in Paris is also listed. It is a social-science institution whose few papers in our library are nonetheless well cited.

### Laboratories in computing and language

Many of the research institutes listed are laboratories in computer science, and several deal with human language directly. In Le Mans, the [Laboratoire d'Informatique de l'Université du Mans](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/labs/laboratoire-d-informatique-de-l-universite-du-mans/) sits alongside its parent university. Both appear high in the list, which gives the city a strong place in the French entries on this site. In Nancy, the [Laboratoire Lorrain de Recherche en Informatique et ses Applications](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/labs/laboratoire-lorrain-de-recherche-en-informatique-et-ses-applications/) has a broad body of works. The [Université de Lorraine](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/universite-de-lorraine/) is also listed in the same city.

In Orsay, the [Laboratoire d'Informatique pour la Mécanique et les Sciences de l'Ingénieur](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/labs/laboratoire-d-informatique-pour-la-mecanique-et-les-sciences-de-l-ingenieur/) has one of the larger and more cited bodies of work among the laboratories. It appears near [Université Paris-Sud](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/universite-paris-sud/), also in Orsay. In Gif-sur-Yvette, the [Laboratoire Interdisciplinaire des Sciences du Numérique](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/labs/laboratoire-interdisciplinaire-des-sciences-du-numerique/) is listed close to Université Paris-Saclay and [CentraleSupélec](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/labs/centralesupelec/).

Paris itself has several laboratories with names tied to language. [ALMANACH: Modélisation et analyse linguistique automatique et humanités computationnelles](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/labs/almanach-modelisation-et-analyse-linguistique-automatique-et-humanites/) works on automatic linguistic modelling and computational humanities. It has a well-cited set of works in our library. [Analyse Linguistique Profonde à Grande Echelle](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/labs/analyse-linguistique-profonde-a-grande-echelle/), whose name refers to deep linguistic analysis at large scale, also appears with many works. The [Laboratoire de Linguistique Formelle](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/labs/laboratoire-de-linguistique-formelle/) represents formal linguistics. In Montrouge, just outside Paris, [Langues, Textes, Traitements Informatiques, Cognition](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/labs/langues-textes-traitements-informatiques-cognition/) brings together languages, texts, computer processing and cognition. [LIP6](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/labs/lip6/), another Paris computing laboratory, completes this group.

Elsewhere, the [Institut de Recherche en Informatique et Systèmes Aléatoires](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/labs/institut-de-recherche-en-informatique-et-systemes-aleatoires/) in Rennes has a small but much-cited set of papers. In Toulouse, the [Institut de Recherche en Informatique de Toulouse](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/labs/institut-de-recherche-en-informatique-de-toulouse/) has one of the larger bodies of works among the regional laboratories. Grenoble is represented by the [Laboratoire d'Informatique de Grenoble](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/labs/laboratoire-d-informatique-de-grenoble/), and Avignon by the [Laboratoire Informatique d'Avignon](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/labs/laboratoire-informatique-d-avignon/). In Champs-sur-Marne, the [Laboratoire d'Informatique Gaspard-Monge](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/labs/laboratoire-d-informatique-gaspard-monge/) appears with a small presence, as does the Laboratoire d'Informatique de Paris-Nord in Villetaneuse. In Palaiseau, the [Laboratoire Traitement et Communication de l'Information](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/labs/laboratoire-traitement-et-communication-de-l-information/) works on information processing and communication.

The names of these laboratories are a guide to the fields involved. Informatics, digital sciences, information processing and linguistics recur throughout. Among the works here, France's contribution therefore appears closely tied to computing and the study of language. This describes the content of this library only, not French research as a whole.

### Universities

The universities in the list show the same broad geography. In the Paris region, besides Université Paris-Saclay and Université Paris-Sud, the list includes [Université Paris Diderot](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/universite-paris-diderot/), [Université Paris Cité](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/universite-paris-cite/), [Sorbonne Université](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/sorbonne-universite/) and [Université Paris Sciences et Lettres](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/universite-paris-sciences-et-lettres/). The [École Normale Supérieure - PSL](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/labs/ecole-normale-superieure-psl/) is classed as a research institute and has a well-cited set of works. Sorbonne Université stands out among the Paris universities for the breadth and citation of its work here.

Some older and newer names appear side by side. Université Pierre-et-Marie-Curie and Paris-Sorbonne University are both listed with small sets of works, alongside Sorbonne Université. Université Paris Diderot appears next to Université Paris Cité. In the same way, Université Paris-Sud appears near Université Paris-Saclay. The list does not explain how these bodies relate. It records cited work wherever a paper names an institution, so it can include both earlier and later university names.

South of Paris, Palaiseau is home to [École Polytechnique](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/ecole-polytechnique/), [Institut Polytechnique de Paris](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/institut-polytechnique-de-paris/) and [Télécom Paris](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/telecom-paris/). Together with the Laboratoire Traitement et Communication de l'Information, they form a cluster around engineering and telecommunications. To the east, Champs-sur-Marne gathers the École nationale des ponts et chaussées, the Laboratoire d'Informatique Gaspard-Monge, the Pôle de recherche et d'enseignement supérieur Université Paris-Est and Paris-Est Sup. These last three share a small set of works with a similar citation profile. Villetaneuse is home to Université Sorbonne Paris Nord. Université Sorbonne Nouvelle and the Collège de France also appear in Paris, each with a modest presence.

Outside the capital, [Université Grenoble Alpes](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/universite-grenoble-alpes/) in Saint-Martin-d'Hères has a compact but much-cited set of works. The Institut polytechnique de Grenoble and the Laboratoire d'Informatique de Grenoble are listed nearby. Toulouse appears through the [Université de Toulouse](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/universite-de-toulouse/) and [Université Toulouse III - Paul Sabatier](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/universite-toulouse-iii-paul-sabatier/), alongside the Toulouse computing institute. Avignon has both the [Université d'Avignon et des Pays de Vaucluse](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/universite-d-avignon-et-des-pays-de-vaucluse/) and its informatics laboratory. In Valbonne, [EURECOM](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/eurecom/) is listed with a small set of well-cited papers. Nantes Université and Aix-Marseille Université complete the regional picture.

### Companies

Companies are rare among the French entries on this first page. [Systran](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/companies/systran/), a Paris company, appears with a small presence. Its place in the list adds an industrial side to a picture otherwise dominated by public research bodies and universities. It also fits the language-related theme seen in many of the laboratory names.

### Geography of the French entries

Overall, French research on this site is strongly centred on Paris and its surroundings. The capital and nearby towns such as Orsay, Gif-sur-Yvette, Palaiseau, Champs-sur-Marne, Montrouge, Villetaneuse and Le Chesnay-Rocquencourt hold a large share of the listed institutions. They include the national research bodies, several language laboratories and a group of engineering schools.

The regions still add a good deal. Le Mans has a strong place for a city with only two listed bodies, both near the top. Nancy has a laboratory with a broad output. Grenoble and Rennes have smaller but much-cited sets of works. Toulouse has several institutions with steady output. Marseille is notable for the high citation of a modest group of papers. Avignon, Nantes and Valbonne add further centres.

### Reading the list

The list should be read as a map of where cited research on this site was carried out in France. It is not a full account of French science. Institutions appear only if their researchers took part in more than one paper in the library, and their order reflects how often that work has been cited. Many entries are closely linked to one another. Laboratories sit inside universities, older university names appear beside their successors, and national bodies span many sites. As a result, a single paper can count toward several French institutions at once. The fields suggested by the names, mainly computer science, digital technology and the study of language, describe the works collected here. Further institutions with smaller presences continue on the second page of the listing.
