## About

### Profile

[Research institutions in Greece](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/orgs/country/gr/) is the country section of this library's directory of research organisations. It covers universities, laboratories, companies and other bodies in Greece whose researchers wrote at least two of the papers held on this site. Four institutions currently meet that threshold. One is a university and three are research institutes, all located in the Athens area. Their cities are Athens and Marousi.

The section belongs to a wider index of organisations, which can be browsed across [all kinds](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/orgs/) of institution and across countries. Within the Greek section, the institutions are ordered by the cited work their scientists produced while there. The ordering therefore reflects how much the papers written at each place have been cited by other works. It does not measure size, funding or standing in any broader sense. A small institute with a few widely cited papers can rank above a larger body whose papers in our library have drawn less attention.

Because the library holds only part of the scientific literature, the Greek section is a narrow view. It shows the Greek institutions whose work appears here often enough to pass the two-paper threshold. It does not describe Greek research as a whole. Many Greek universities and research centres are absent simply because the library holds fewer than two papers from them, or none at all.

### How the institutions are ranked

The list orders institutions by the citations their scientists' work has gathered, and for each entry it also shows how many works in our library are linked to it. Comparing the two measures says something about the kind of presence each institution has here. A place with many works and many citations has a broad and well-cited body of papers in the library. A place with fewer works but a high position has a small set of papers that each draw heavy citation.

On that basis, the Greek list divides into three tiers. The university at the top has the largest number of works and the largest citation total. The two research institutes in second and third place each have a similar, smaller number of works. Their citation totals differ clearly, which separates them in the ranking. The fourth institution has the fewest works here and the lowest citation total, though its papers are still cited at a substantial level.

All of these figures come from the library's own holdings and change as papers are added. For that reason the position of each institution is best read as a snapshot. A newly added paper from any of these places, or the first papers from another Greek institution, could change the order or lengthen the list.

### Athens University of Economics and Business

The first institution on the list is [Athens University of Economics and Business](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/athens-university-of-economics-and-business/), a university in Athens. It is the only university among the four Greek entries, and it has both the most works and the most cited body of work of any Greek institution in the library.

Its lead comes from breadth as well as citation. It has clearly more works in our library than any of the three research institutes, so its first place rests on a larger set of papers. Its own page in the library gives the detail behind this summary: the people who wrote the papers, the works themselves, and the topics they cover. The university's name points to economics and business as its founding concerns. However, the country section does not say which fields its papers in our library belong to, so readers should consult the university's page before drawing conclusions about its research focus here.

### Institute for Language and Speech Processing

Second is the [Institute for Language and Speech Processing](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/labs/institute-for-language-and-speech-processing/), a research institute in Marousi. Its name describes its field: the computational study of human language, both written and spoken. Among the Greek entries it is the one whose name most directly signals a single discipline.

The institute has fewer works here than the university at the top. Even so, its citation total places it clearly second, ahead of an institute with a similar number of papers. Its works in our library are, on average, cited heavily. This suggests that the library holds a small number of papers from the institute that other researchers have drawn on widely. The institute's own page lists those works and the scientists behind them.

### Athena Research and Innovation Center

Third is the [Athena Research and Innovation Center In Information Communication & Knowledge Technologies](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/labs/athena-research-and-innovation-center-in-information-communication-knowledge/), also a research institute in Marousi. Its full name places it in information, communication and knowledge technologies. That label is broad enough to cover computing, data and related engineering fields.

On this site, the Athena centre has about as many works as the Institute for Language and Speech Processing. Its citation total is lower, however, which is why it ranks below that institute. It still ranks above the fourth Greek entry on both measures. Like the other entries, it is shown with its kind and city, and its own page carries the full set of works, people and topics.

The Athena centre and the Institute for Language and Speech Processing are both listed in Marousi. The two Marousi institutes account for the middle of the ranking. Together they form the group of Greek research institutes with the largest presence in the library after the university.

### National Centre of Scientific Research "Demokritos"

Fourth is the [National Centre of Scientific Research "Demokritos"](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/labs/national-centre-of-scientific-research-demokritos/), a research institute in Athens. It has the smallest number of works among the four Greek institutions on this site. It still clears the two-paper threshold, and its papers have gathered a considerable number of citations.

The centre's name describes it as a national centre for scientific research, without naming a single field. The country section does not show which areas its papers here belong to. Its own page in the library lists the works, the researchers credited to the centre, and the topics their papers address.

### Research strengths

The country section does not list topics or works directly. Its summary of Greek research strengths therefore rests on what the four institutions are and on the names they carry. Three of the four names point towards the information sciences. One institute is devoted to language and speech processing. Another covers information, communication and knowledge technologies. The third is a national centre of scientific research whose remit, judging from its name alone, is general.

Taken together, the two Marousi institutes suggest that much of the Greek work held in this library sits in computing and language technology. The university at the head of the list carries a name tied to economics and business. Without its list of works, though, the section cannot show whether its papers here lie in those fields or elsewhere. The cautious conclusion is limited. Greek research on this site comes mainly from a few institutions around Athens, and two of them are research institutes in information and language technology.

The individual institution pages are the place to confirm or correct this picture. Each one gives its own topics, units, people and most cited works. Together they show which specific fields the Greek papers in the library belong to.

### Geography

All four Greek institutions on this site are in the Athens area. Two are listed in Athens itself, namely the university and the "Demokritos" centre. The other two, the Institute for Language and Speech Processing and the Athena centre, are listed in Marousi.

This concentration describes the library's holdings, not the distribution of research across Greece. Institutions in other Greek cities do not appear because they have not passed the two-paper threshold on this site. The Greek section of the library is therefore, for now, a portrait of a few institutions in and around the capital.

### Leading scientists, landmark works and collaborations

The country section is an index of institutions. It does not name individual scientists, single out particular papers, or show co-authorship links between Greek institutions and partners elsewhere. For those details, readers should go to the pages of the four institutions. Each one lists its researchers in order, its works with their citations, and the topics and units under which the papers are grouped.

From those pages it is possible to trace who wrote the most cited Greek papers in the library, which subjects they addressed, and which other institutions and countries appear alongside them. The country section itself supports a simpler set of observations. Greek research in the library is concentrated in four institutions. A university leads on both volume and citation. Two research institutes in Marousi follow with similar numbers of papers but different levels of citation. A national research centre in Athens completes the list.

### Over time

The country section gives no years for the works it summarises, so it cannot show how Greek research in the library has developed over time. Any account of when the papers were written, or how the output of each institution has changed, has to come from the works listed on the individual institution pages.

What can be said is that the section changes as the library grows. The membership and order of the list depend on which papers the library holds and how often they are cited. New papers from Greek authors could add institutions that now fall below the threshold. They could also shift the relative positions of the four institutions currently listed.
