## About

### Profile

Indonesia appears on this site through a group of universities whose researchers have contributed papers to the library. Every Indonesian institution here is a university. No laboratories, companies, hospitals or government bodies have yet reached the threshold for inclusion. The universities sit on Java and in the Banten region next to it. Bandung, the Jakarta area (including Depok and Ciputat), Yogyakarta, Serang, Pasuruan and Malang are all represented. The library groups them into four city regions: [Bandung](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/agglomerations/bandung/), [Jakarta](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/agglomerations/jakarta/), [Yogyakarta](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/agglomerations/yogyakarta/) and [Surabaya](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/agglomerations/surabaya/). Pasuruan in East Java falls under the last.

Indonesian work in our library has two strands. The first is a small body of computational work on language. It includes the most cited Indonesian papers here: a benchmark for Indonesian language understanding, a multilingual morphology database, and several studies that apply large language models to Arabic. The second strand is much wider. It consists of studies in Arabic language education and Arabic linguistics, mostly from Islamic universities, and concentrates on how grammar is taught in schools, Islamic boarding schools and universities.

The topic profile shows this balance. Nearly all Indonesian works here carry the label [Semitic languages](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/topics/semitic-languages/), and almost all fall under the field of [Linguistics & languages](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/shelves/linguistics/). A smaller set is shelved under [Natural language processing](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/shelves/nlp/).

### History

Among the works here, Indonesian research begins in 2020, and the year already contains both strands. [IndoNLU: Benchmark and Resources for Evaluating Indonesian Natural Language Understanding](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/wilie-2020-indonlu-benchmark-resources-evaluating-indonesian/) appeared that year, tied to [Bandung Institute of Technology](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/bandung-institute-of-technology/) and the [University of Indonesia](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/university-of-indonesia/). In the same year Ade Arip Ardiansyah published a study of an integrated Arabic grammar curriculum in an Islamic boarding school, from Bandung. A study of Malaysian learners' mastery of Arabic morphology came from [Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/syarif-hidayatullah-state-islamic-university-jakarta/).

In 2022 the computational strand continued with the release of UniMorph 4.0 and a paper on generating referring expressions for objects in photographs. Arabic education research held a steady but small presence in 2023 and 2024, and 2024 also brought an Arabic stance-detection entry built on large language models. The volume of Indonesian work here grows sharply in 2025. Most of that year's output is Arabic grammar pedagogy: classroom methods, teaching games, mobile applications and analyses of Qur'anic language. The library already holds several works dated 2026. They include an Arabic hallucination benchmark for language models, along with new studies of phonology, language interference and gamified teaching.

### Research profile

The largest body of Indonesian work in our library concerns the teaching of Arabic grammar, both syntax (nahwu) and morphology (sharaf or sarf). Many of these studies test a classroom method or teaching aid. [Peer Teaching Method Integrated with Card Media](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/rizal-2023-peer-teaching-method-integrated-card/), from the [Indonesia University of Education](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/indonesia-university-of-education/), addresses weak syntax skills among school pupils. It combines peer instruction with card-based materials. [Enhancing Arabic Morphology Learning via Jigsaw](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/habib-2025-enhancing-arabic-morphology-learning-jigsaw/) applies cooperative jigsaw learning in an Islamic boarding school. Its mixed design includes a quasi-experiment that compares an experimental group with a control group through pre-tests and post-tests. [Developing the Traditional Game Engklek to Teach Arabic Grammar in Madrasah Tsanawiyah](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/rohanda-2025-developing-traditional-game-engklek-teach/) adapts a local hopscotch-style game for grammar lessons. Its authors see it as a way to make teaching livelier while keeping cultural tradition in use.

Several studies turn to technology and media. [Developing an Android-Based Application for Arabic Grammar Learning](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/nurdianto-2025-developing-android-based-application-arabic/) designs a mobile tool for beginners and aligns it with the Common European Framework of Reference. [Development of an Arabic Grammar Instructional Medium Based on Illustrated Stories](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/solihah-2026-development-arabic-grammar-instructional-medium/) follows the ADDIE research-and-development model to produce a comic-style medium for elementary school pupils. [Enhancing Self-Efficacy Through Gamified Learning](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/ghofur-2026-enhancing-self-efficacy-through-gamified/) reports a quasi-experiment with undergraduates in Arabic Language Education at Universitas Hasyim Asy'ari. It asks whether gamified morphology instruction raises learners' confidence.

A related line of work examines traditional texts and teaching traditions. [Pedagogical Insights from Al-Mawahib Al-Rabbaniyah](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/solehudin-2024-pedagogical-insights-al-mawahib-al/) asks whether learning grammar through a versified rendering of the Ajrumiyyah helps students. [The I’rab Method of Habib Hasan Baharun](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/baharun-2025-irab-method-habib-hasan-baharun/) compares a parsing-centred method with conventional instruction and looks at its effects on learners. [Streamlining Arabic Grammar to Facilitate Mastery of Qirâ’at al-Kutub](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/ardiansyah-2025-streamlining-arabic-grammar-facilitate-mastery/) argues that grammar lessons burden students with definitions and classifications. It proposes a leaner approach aimed at reading classical books. Learner factors are the subject of [Exploring the Interaction of Personality, Strategy, and Learning Environment](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/bahy-2025-exploring-interaction-personality-strategy-learning/). This qualitative study looks at how individual traits, learning strategies and surroundings combine in successful grammar learning.

Arabic linguistics in a narrower sense forms a further strand, and here the [Morphology](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/topics/morphology/) label recurs. [The Active Participle (Ism Fā‘il) in Surah Al-Anfāl](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/irfandi-2025-active-participle-ism-fail-surah/) catalogues active participles in one chapter of the Qur'an. From that inventory it builds an inductive teaching model in which students meet real examples before forming rules. [An Analysis of Majāzi and Haqīqi Meanings in Ilmu Dilālah](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/saepudin-2025-analysis-majazi-haqiqi-meanings-ilmu/) is a literature study of literal and figurative meaning within the Arabic science of signification. [Phonological Changes in Classical Arabic to Modern Arabic](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/susiawati-2026-phonological-changes-classical-arabic-modern/) traces sound change from the classical tradition of phonetics to the modern language. [Acehnese interference in students' spoken Arabic](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/ahmad-2026-acehnese-interference-students-spoken-arabic/) observes everyday oral interaction in a boarding school and analyses how the local language shapes students' Arabic at several linguistic levels.

The computational strand is smaller, but it holds the most cited Indonesian work here. IndoNLU set out benchmark tasks and resources for evaluating language understanding in Indonesian, a language whose large online community had not been matched by progress in language technology. It belongs to the topic of [Evaluation & benchmarks](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/topics/evaluation-benchmarks/). [UniMorph 4.0: Universal Morphology](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/batsuren-2022-unimorph-4/) extends a multilingual database of inflection tables. The Arabic computational works from the [University of Petroleum](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/university-of-petroleum/) connect to the topics of [Language models & pretraining](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/topics/language-models/), [Sentiment & emotion](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/topics/sentiment-emotion/) and [Question answering](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/topics/question-answering/). [Exploring AI Capabilities in Arabic Grammar](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/maulidiya-2025-exploring-ai-capabilities-arabic-grammar/) links both strands. It tests ChatGPT and Gemini on grammatical analysis of example sentences built from a standard Arabic grammar textbook.

### Leading scientists

[Bryan Wilie](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/authors/bryan-wilie/), of Bandung Institute of Technology, comes first among the people with a page. Wilie is the first author of IndoNLU, whose co-authors include [Genta Indra Winata](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/authors/genta-indra-winata/). Wilie's work in our library is therefore centred on building evaluation resources for Indonesian language understanding. Other people the site associates with Bandung Institute of Technology are Winata, [Samuel Cahyawijaya](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/authors/samuel-cahyawijaya/) and [Fajri Koto](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/authors/fajri-koto/). Koto also appears in connection with the University of Indonesia. There, the site further names [Alham Fikri Aji](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/authors/alham-fikri-aji/), [Lintang Sutawika](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/authors/lintang-sutawika/), [Clara Vania](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/authors/clara-vania/) and [Andros Tjandra](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/authors/andros-tjandra/). Together these names outline the computational language research tied to the two universities.

[Ade Arip Ardiansyah](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/authors/ade-arip-ardiansyah/), of [Sunan Gunung Djati State Islamic University Bandung](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/sunan-gunung-djati-state-islamic-university-bandung/), is second. Ardiansyah's work here concerns how Arabic grammar is organised and taught. The 2020 curriculum study with Azhar Muhammad examines a boarding school that blends centrally set and locally developed elements in its grammar programme. The 2025 paper with Izzuddin Musthafa, Isop Syafei and others proposes slimming down grammar instruction so that university students can read classical Arabic texts more readily.

[Muhamad Solehudin](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/authors/muhamad-solehudin/), of [Universitas Islam Internasional Darullughah Wadda'wah](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/universitas-islam-internasional-darullughah-wadda-wah/) in Pasuruan, is third. Solehudin's work in our library looks at grammar teaching rooted in the pesantren tradition. With Nur hanifansyah, Solehudin studied learning through a versified grammar text. With Segaf Baharun, Masnun and others, Solehudin examined the parsing method associated with Habib Hasan Baharun.

### Landmark works

IndoNLU is by a wide margin the most cited Indonesian work in the library. Its contribution is infrastructural: it brought together tasks, datasets and resources so that systems for Indonesian could be compared on a shared footing. Many papers in our library build on it, and it gives both Bandung Institute of Technology and the University of Indonesia their place at the top of the Indonesian list.

UniMorph 4.0, by Khuyagbaatar Batsuren, Omer Goldman, Salam Khalifa and colleagues, is the second most cited. It presents a new release of a cross-linguistic collection of inflection tables used in morphological research and modelling. On this site it is attributed to the University of Indonesia.

Ardiansyah's [Implementation of Integrative Arabic Grammar (Nahwu & Sharaf) Curriculum in Islamic Boarding School](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/ardiansyah-2020-implementation-integrative-arabic-grammar-nahwu/) is the most cited of the Arabic education studies. It describes how one school combines syntax and morphology in a single curriculum, joining directives from above with locally shaped content.

[MGKM at StanceEval2024 Fine-Tuning Large Language Models for Arabic Stance Detection](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/alghaslan-2024-mgkm-stanceeval2024-fine-tuning-large/), by Mamoun Alghaslan and Khaled Almutairy, is a shared-task entry. It fine-tunes large language models to detect target-specific stance in Arabic tweets. [HalluScore: Large Language Model Hallucination Question Answering Benchmark](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/alansari-2026-halluscore-large-language-model-hallucination/), by Aisha Alansari and Hamzah Luqman, responds to the scarcity of Arabic resources for measuring how often language models produce unfounded answers. On this site, both works are credited to the University of Petroleum in Yogyakarta.

Among the remaining cited works are the Solehudin and Baharun studies of traditional grammar pedagogy. [Referring Expressions with Rational Speech Act Framework: A Probabilistic Approach](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/le-2022-referring-expressions-rational-speech-act/), by Hieu Le, Taufiq Daryanto, Fabian Zhafransyah and others, is also cited. It uses a probabilistic model of pragmatic communication to produce phrases that pick out objects in images, and on this site it is linked to Bandung Institute of Technology.

### Labs and units

The Indonesian entries are all universities. Each has its own entry on the site with its works and people. They fall into two broad groups.

The first group is made up of general and technical universities. Bandung Institute of Technology contributes IndoNLU and the referring-expressions paper. The University of Indonesia, in Depok, shares IndoNLU and adds UniMorph 4.0. The University of Petroleum in Yogyakarta is the home on this site of the Arabic stance-detection and hallucination-benchmark works. The Indonesia University of Education in Bandung contributes the peer-teaching study and the comparison of chatbots on Arabic grammar.

The second group consists of Islamic universities, and they supply most of the Arabic education research. Sunan Gunung Djati State Islamic University Bandung contributes Ardiansyah's two studies and the engklek game paper. Universitas Islam Internasional Darullughah Wadda'wah contributes the versified-grammar, parsing-method and jigsaw studies. [Sunan Kalijaga State Islamic University Yogyakarta](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/sunan-kalijaga-state-islamic-university-yogyakarta/) contributes the work on Acehnese interference, the active participle in Surah Al-Anfāl and the Android grammar application. Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta, in Ciputat, contributes the [study of Malaysian students' achievement in Arabic morphology](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/papers/sidiq-2020-measuring-malaysian-students-achievement-level/) and the historical review of Arabic phonology. [Universitas Islam Negeri Sultan Maulana Hasanuddin Banten](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/universitas-islam-negeri-sultan-maulana-hasanuddin-banten/), in Serang, contributes the ilmu dilālah literature study and the illustrated-story medium. [Universitas Islam Negeri Maulana Malik Ibrahim](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/universitas-islam-negeri-maulana-malik-ibrahim/), in Malang, contributes the studies of learner personality and gamified morphology teaching.

Citations are unevenly spread. The two universities behind IndoNLU account for most of the attention Indonesian work has received here. Several Islamic universities have contributed as many papers or more, but their work has so far been cited far less, and some of their newest papers have not yet been cited on this site.

### Collaborations

The clearest institutional link among the works here is IndoNLU, which ties Bandung Institute of Technology to the University of Indonesia. The overlap of people between the two universities points the same way: Fajri Koto is associated with both. UniMorph 4.0 places the University of Indonesia within a large multilingual effort whose first authors, Batsuren, Goldman and Khalifa, belong to a wider international team.

The Arabic education studies are usually written by small teams within one university, often three or more co-authors who work on a shared classroom setting. Some reach beyond their home institution. The gamified morphology study was carried out with students at Universitas Hasyim Asy'ari. The morphology study from Syarif Hidayatullah examines learners in Malaysia, and its co-authors include Yasin Mohamed Yasin M. Sidiq and Hassan Mohamed Doka. The University of Petroleum's Arabic language-model works are authored by teams whose names, such as Alghaslan, Almutairy, Alansari and Luqman, do not otherwise appear among the Indonesian authors here, which suggests links with researchers working on Arabic elsewhere. The site does not show companies among the Indonesian institutions, so no ties between industry and the universities can be traced here.

### Timeline

In 2020, the Indonesian presence on this site opens with three works. IndoNLU, from Bandung Institute of Technology and the University of Indonesia, lays the ground for evaluating Indonesian language technology. Ardiansyah's curriculum study in Bandung and the Malaysian morphology study from Ciputat begin the Arabic education strand.

In 2022, the computational line widens with UniMorph 4.0 at the University of Indonesia and the referring-expressions paper at Bandung Institute of Technology. Both continue to draw citations among the works here.

In 2023 and 2024, Arabic education research holds its place through the peer-teaching study at the Indonesia University of Education and Solehudin's study of versified grammar in Pasuruan. In 2024 the University of Petroleum adds the stance-detection entry, the first of its Arabic language-model papers.

In 2025, Indonesian output on this site is at its fullest, and most of it concerns Arabic grammar teaching and analysis. Papers that year cover the parsing method, the jigsaw technique, the engklek game, a CEFR-aligned mobile application, a pared-down grammar for reading classical books, learner personality, the active participle in the Qur'an, figurative meaning, and the testing of ChatGPT and Gemini on grammar.

In 2026, the newest works continue both strands. HalluScore offers an Arabic benchmark for hallucination in language models. Alongside it come studies of Acehnese interference in spoken Arabic, gamified morphology teaching, illustrated-story materials for young learners, and the historical development of Arabic sounds.
