## About

### Profile

This entry gathers the research institutions in [Japan](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/orgs/country/jp/) that have contributed to the scientific papers held in this library. An institution appears only when its researchers wrote more than one of the papers collected here. The list is therefore a view of Japanese research as seen through this particular collection, not a census of the country's science. It belongs to a wider directory of [organisations of all kinds](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/orgs/), and the same structure applies to every country in it.

The institutions are ordered by the cited work their scientists carried out while affiliated with them. They cover several kinds of organisation: national universities and private universities, public research institutes, a government funding body, and private companies. Most are based in Tokyo. The rest are spread across Kyoto, Osaka, Nagoya, Sendai, Tsukuba, Wako, Ikoma, Hayama, Toyohashi, Nomi, Matsuyama and Kobe. Together they show a research community that, on this site, works mainly in computing, information and language.

### Research strengths

The list records institutions, not individual papers, so the clearest view of Japan's strengths here comes from which institutions take part and how much their work is cited. Several of the names point to the same broad area. The [National Institute of Information and Communications Technology](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/labs/national-institute-of-information-and-communications-technology/), the [National Institute of Informatics](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/labs/national-institute-of-informatics/), the [Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute International](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/labs/advanced-telecommunications-research-institute-international/) and the [National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/labs/national-institute-for-japanese-language-and-linguistics/) all signal information processing, communication or language in their titles. Taken with the technical universities and technology companies on the list, this suggests that Japan's contribution to the collection sits mostly in computer science and in the study of language by computer.

The weight of the contribution is uneven. A small group of universities and research bodies accounts for most of the cited work. A long tail of institutions appears with only a few papers. Some of these few papers have been cited a great deal, and others hardly at all. This pattern is common in a specialised collection: a handful of highly cited papers can lift an otherwise small presence near the top, while institutions with steady output and modest citation sit further down.

### The universities

[The University of Tokyo](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/the-university-of-tokyo/) heads the list. It has the largest body of work among Japanese institutions on this site and the highest citation total. [Kyoto University](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/kyoto-university/) comes very close to Tokyo in how often its work is cited, although it has somewhat fewer papers here and sits fourth in the ordering. Between them, these two universities hold much of the most-cited Japanese research in the collection.

The [Nara Institute of Science and Technology](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/nara-institute-of-science-and-technology/) in Ikoma stands second. Its volume of papers comes near that of the University of Tokyo, which makes it one of the most productive Japanese institutions in the collection. Its citation total is lower than those of Tokyo and Kyoto, but it is still substantial.

The [Tokyo Institute of Technology](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/tokyo-institute-of-technology/) has a steady set of papers with moderate citation. [Tohoku University](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/tohoku-university/) in Sendai shows several papers that have so far drawn relatively few citations. [Waseda University](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/waseda-university/) and [Keio University](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/keio-university/), both in Tokyo, are represented by small groups of papers that are reasonably well cited.

Some smaller universities have a large effect compared with their size here. The [Toyota Technological Institute](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/toyota-technological-institute/) in Nagoya has only a few papers in our library, yet they are cited heavily, more than those of many larger universities. The [Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/japan-advanced-institute-of-science-and-technology/) in Nomi, the [University of Tsukuba](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/university-of-tsukuba/) and [The Graduate University for Advanced Studies, SOKENDAI](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/the-graduate-university-for-advanced-studies-sokendai/) in Hayama show the same pattern on a smaller scale. Each has a pair of papers that are well cited.

Further down the list are [The University of Osaka](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/the-university-of-osaka/), [Tokyo Metropolitan University](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/tokyo-metropolitan-university/) and the [Toyohashi University of Technology](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/toyohashi-university-of-technology/). Each contributes a few papers with moderate citation. [Nagoya University](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/nagoya-university/), the [Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/tokyo-university-of-agriculture-and-technology/), [Ehime University](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/ehime-university/) in Matsuyama and [Konan University](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/konan-university/) in Kobe appear with small sets of papers that have attracted little citation so far. These may be recent papers or papers on narrower questions. The list itself does not say which.

### The research institutes

Japan's public and semi-public research institutes play a large part in the collection. The National Institute of Information and Communications Technology, based in Tokyo, ranks third overall. Its papers are fewer than those of the leading universities, but they are well cited. The National Institute of Informatics has a larger set of papers and a strong citation total, which puts it among the more prominent contributors.

The [National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/labs/national-institute-of-advanced-industrial-science-and-technology/) in Tsukuba is represented by several papers with solid citation. [RIKEN](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/labs/riken/) in Wako has a similar number of papers, but they are cited less often so far. The Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute International in Kyoto has only a few papers here, though they are well cited relative to their number.

The National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics is the most distinctive case. It has several papers in the collection, more than some institutions placed above it. Its work has, however, barely been cited so far. This suggests research on the Japanese language itself, such as corpora or linguistic description, which tends to reach a narrower readership than general methods in computing. That reading follows from the institute's name and its citation pattern rather than from any paper description.

### Companies and government

Industry is clearly present. [NTT](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/companies/ntt/), based in Tokyo, is the strongest corporate contributor. It ranks fifth overall, with a sizeable body of papers and a citation total above most universities on the list. This places corporate research labs among the main sources of Japanese work in the collection.

[Honda](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/companies/honda/) and its research arm, [Honda Research Institute Japan Co., Ltd.](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/companies/honda-research-institute-japan-co-ltd/) in Wako, appear with matching profiles. Each has a pair of papers, and both carry the same very high citation total. This indicates that the same research is credited to both the parent company and its institute. Measured by citation per paper, the Honda work is among the most influential Japanese contributions on this site.

[Preferred Networks](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/companies/preferred-networks/), a Tokyo company, has a few papers that are well cited. This shows a younger technology firm taking part in the research collected here. [Toshiba](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/companies/toshiba/) is represented by a pair of papers with moderate citation.

The [Japan Science and Technology Agency](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/government/japan-science-and-technology-agency/), a government body in Tokyo, also appears on the list. Its small set of papers is strongly cited. Researchers affiliated with a funding and coordinating agency appear as authors here, which suggests that publicly supported programmes link to some of the more cited Japanese work in the collection.

### Collaborations

The list does not record joint papers between named institutions, so specific partnerships cannot be traced from it. Two points can still be drawn. First, the matching figures for Honda and Honda Research Institute Japan Co., Ltd. show shared credit within one corporate group. Second, there is a clear mix of universities, public institutes, companies and a government agency, all working in related areas. Researchers in Japan who contribute to this collection move across academic, public and industrial settings. Readers who want details of co-authorship should follow the links to each institution, where the individual papers and their authors are listed.

### Geography

Tokyo dominates the map. The University of Tokyo, the Tokyo Institute of Technology, Waseda University, Keio University, Tokyo Metropolitan University, the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, the National Institute of Informatics, the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology, the National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics, the Japan Science and Technology Agency, NTT, Honda, Toshiba and Preferred Networks are all listed there.

Outside the capital, Kyoto stands out, with Kyoto University and the Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute International. The Kansai region also includes the Nara Institute of Science and Technology in Ikoma, The University of Osaka and Konan University in Kobe. Nagoya hosts Nagoya University and the Toyota Technological Institute. Tsukuba is home to the University of Tsukuba and the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology. Wako, where RIKEN and the Honda research institute are listed, is a further centre. Sendai, Toyohashi, Nomi, Hayama and Matsuyama each contribute a single institution.

### Reading the list

The ordering reflects the cited work produced at each institution, not only the raw count of papers or citations. This is why Kyoto University, whose citation total nearly matches that of the University of Tokyo, appears below the Nara Institute of Science and Technology and the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology. It is also why institutions with highly cited but few papers, such as Toyota Technological Institute or Honda, sit in the middle of the list rather than at its head.

Because the library grows over time, the set of institutions and their relative positions will change as new papers are added. The picture given here describes Japan's presence in this collection as it currently stands. It should not be read as a judgement on the standing of any institution in its field as a whole.
