## About

### Profile

Qatar appears in this library as a country whose research output on the site comes from a small group of institutions, all of them in Doha, the capital. The country's listing gathers the universities, laboratories, companies and other bodies in Qatar whose researchers have written at least two of the papers held here. They are ordered by the cited work their scientists produced while working there. On this site that group is five institutions: four universities and one nonprofit organisation. The overview of the country sits within the wider [directory of institutions](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/orgs/), which can be filtered by kind and by country, and the Qatar entry itself is reached at [Research institutions in Qatar](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/orgs/country/qa/).

The picture is compact. The institutions differ mainly in how much of their work the library holds and in how far that work has been taken up by other researchers through citation. All five give Doha as their location, so the country's research on this site is concentrated in a single city. Many countries in the library spread their research across several cities and regions. Qatar's does not.

The country's entry is a list of institutions and nothing more. It does not attach particular scientists, topics or papers to Qatar as a whole. What can be said about the country's research therefore comes from the standing of each institution, and from how those institutions compare with one another.

### The institutions

Five institutions appear in the listing order. [Hamad bin Khalifa University](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/hamad-bin-khalifa-university/) is a university in Doha. [Qatar Foundation](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/ngos/qatar-foundation/) is a nonprofit in Doha. [Carnegie Mellon University Qatar](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/carnegie-mellon-university-qatar/) is a university in Doha. [Qatar University](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/qatar-university/) is a university in Doha. [Northwestern University in Qatar](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/northwestern-university-in-qatar/) is also a university in Doha.

The mix of kinds is plain. Universities make up most of the group, and the one exception is a nonprofit. No company, hospital or government laboratory in Qatar reaches the threshold for inclusion. That threshold is two or more papers on the site. Other Qatari bodies may well contribute single papers, but they are not listed here. The list should be read as showing the institutions with a repeated presence in the library, not every place in the country where research happens.

### Hamad bin Khalifa University

Hamad bin Khalifa University stands first in the list, and by a wide margin. Among the Qatari institutions it has the largest body of works on the site. Those works have also drawn far more citations than those of any other institution in the country. In this library, the cited research linked to Qatar comes overwhelmingly from this one university.

This dominance shapes any reading of Qatar's research here. When the country's output on the site is discussed in terms of influence, it is mostly the output of Hamad bin Khalifa University. The university's own page in the library is the place to look for its fields, its most cited papers and the researchers who wrote them. The country listing gives none of those details, and nothing about the university's subject areas can be drawn from it alone.

The size of the gap matters for comparison. The second-placed institutions are far behind, both in the number of works on the site and in citations. Qatar's presence in the library is therefore led by one institution, with the others making smaller contributions.

### Qatar Foundation

Qatar Foundation is listed second and is the only nonprofit among the five. Its body of works on the site is modest, smaller than that of the first-placed university. Those works have nonetheless gathered a substantial number of citations relative to their number. Each of its papers has been cited, on average, more often than the papers of several of the universities that follow it.

The listing gives no detail on the Foundation's own research activities, so its fields of work cannot be named from this overview. What it does show is that a non-university body is among the main sources of cited research from Qatar on this site. Among the institutions listed for many countries, nonprofits are less common than universities. Here one appears near the top.

### Carnegie Mellon University Qatar

Carnegie Mellon University Qatar comes third in the list. In the number of works held on the site it is close to Qatar Foundation, and slightly ahead of it. Its works have also gathered somewhat more citations than the Foundation's. Even so, the page places the Foundation above it. The ordering follows the measure of cited work that the library applies, not raw totals alone. Readers comparing the two should treat their positions as close.

As with the other entries, the country page does not name the subjects in which Carnegie Mellon University Qatar is active. Its own profile in the library is where those details appear. At the country level, it is the second of the universities in the list. Its cited output is broadly similar in scale to the Foundation's, and well below that of Hamad bin Khalifa University.

### Qatar University and Northwestern University in Qatar

The last two places go to Qatar University and Northwestern University in Qatar. Both have bodies of work on the site similar in size to those of the Foundation and of Carnegie Mellon University Qatar. Their papers, however, have so far drawn much less citation.

Qatar University's works have gathered a small number of citations. Northwestern University in Qatar's works have gathered fewer still. These two institutions are therefore active in the library, publishing several papers each. Within this collection, though, their work has not yet been taken up by other authors to the degree seen at the higher-ranked institutions.

Low citation figures can have many causes, and the listing explains none of them. The papers may be recent and not yet have had time to be cited. They may belong to fields where citation is sparser. Or the library may hold only part of these institutions' output. Their place at the foot of the list describes their cited work in our library and should not be read as a judgement on their research overall.

### Patterns across the country

Several patterns stand out when the five institutions are read together. The first is concentration in place: every listed institution is in Doha, so Qatar's research on this site is the research of one city. The second is concentration in influence: a single university, Hamad bin Khalifa University, accounts for most of the citations attached to the country's institutions.

The third pattern is a split among the remaining four. Two of them, Qatar Foundation and Carnegie Mellon University Qatar, have bodies of work that are well cited for their size. The other two, Qatar University and Northwestern University in Qatar, have bodies of work of comparable size that have drawn little citation so far. The number of works held is fairly even across these four institutions. It is the uptake of those works that sets them apart.

A fourth pattern concerns kind. Universities predominate, and the presence of a nonprofit among the most cited contributors is the main departure from that. No industrial or clinical institution in Qatar appears in the list.

### Collaborations

The country listing does not show co-authorship between the Qatari institutions, or links between them and institutions or researchers elsewhere. Whether papers from Hamad bin Khalifa University share authors with Qatar Foundation, or whether Carnegie Mellon University Qatar and Northwestern University in Qatar work with partners abroad, cannot be read from this overview. The pages of the individual institutions are the place to look for such connections. They show the works each one holds and, through those works, the people and organisations involved.

### Scope and reading the list

The listing reflects only the papers and authors held in this library. An institution appears when its researchers have written at least two papers on the site. Its position depends on the cited work its scientists did there. Institutions with only one paper here are absent, and work published outside the collection is not counted. The list is therefore a view of Qatar's research as this library sees it, not a full census of research in the country. The relative positions of the five institutions can also change as the collection grows and as citations to existing papers build up.

Readers who want the substance of Qatar's research should start with the institution pages linked above. Those pages show the topics, people and works behind each entry. They are where the country's most cited papers, its active researchers and its subject strengths can be found. The country page provides the frame: five institutions, all in Doha, led by one university.
