## About

### Profile

India appears in this library as a group of universities, company research centres and one dedicated research institute. An institution is included when its researchers wrote at least two of the papers held on this site. The country listing sits within the wider [directory of institutions](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/orgs/), and the [India overview](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/orgs/country/in/) orders its members by how much cited work their scientists did while affiliated with them. What follows describes that listing only: which kinds of organisations appear, where they are, how they are ordered, and what their names and placement suggest about the research collected here. It does not describe Indian science as a whole. Institutions whose researchers wrote fewer papers held here, or none, are absent.

The list mixes public technical universities, newer information-technology institutes, regional universities and the Indian arms of international technology companies. That mix is the clearest feature of India's presence on this site. A large share of the work held here comes from places where engineering and computing are central to the institution's name and purpose. Corporate laboratories in Bengaluru and Hyderabad are as visible as the national institutes of technology and science.

### Research strengths

The listing does not set out subject areas for the country, so any account of strengths has to rest on which institutions appear and how prominent they are. Read that way, the pattern points to technology. Several campuses of the Indian Institutes of Technology are listed, along with institutes of information technology, a university of technology in the capital and a number of software and engineering companies. Institutions with a broader, multi-faculty profile are fewer, though some of them are associated with heavily cited works.

Within this library, then, India's contribution is shaped by technical and applied research centres. Some institutions further down the order, such as [Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/birla-institute-of-technology-and-science-pilani/), [Robert Bosch (India)](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/companies/robert-bosch-india/) and [Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar University](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/dr-bhimrao-ambedkar-university/), are linked to works that have drawn very wide citation. Their position shows that the order weighs the cited work done at each place, rather than simply the total citation a paper went on to gather. Readers who want specific topics should open each institution's own entry, where its works and fields are listed.

### Universities and institutes of technology

The academic side of the list is led by the Indian Institutes of Technology. [Indian Institute of Technology Madras](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/indian-institute-of-technology-madras/) in Chennai is the first university in the order. It is followed by [Indian Institute of Technology Delhi](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/indian-institute-of-technology-delhi/) in New Delhi and [Indian Institute of Technology Bombay](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/indian-institute-of-technology-bombay/) in Mumbai. Among the institutes of technology on this site, IIT Bombay has one of the broader collections of papers, yet it is placed behind Madras and Delhi, again showing that size alone does not decide the order.

Further down come [Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/indian-institute-of-technology-kanpur/) and [Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/indian-institute-of-technology-kharagpur/), institutes in northern and eastern India. Later still are [Indian Institute of Technology Patna](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/indian-institute-of-technology-patna/) and [Indian Institute of Technology BHU](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/indian-institute-of-technology-bhu/) in Varanasi. Taken together, the IIT campuses form the backbone of academic research from India in this library, spanning the country from Chennai in the south to Patna and Kharagpur in the east.

Alongside them stands [Indian Institute of Science Bangalore](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/indian-institute-of-science-bangalore/), the institute here whose name refers to science broadly rather than to technology. Its works in our library carry substantial citation relative to their number.

Institutes devoted specifically to information technology also appear. [International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/international-institute-of-information-technology-hyderabad/) has the largest collection of papers of any Indian institution listed here, and it sits high in the order. [Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology Delhi](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/indraprastha-institute-of-information-technology-delhi/) has a smaller set of works, but they are well cited. Together they show how much of the Indian research gathered on this site relates to computing.

The capital region also contributes [Netaji Subhas University of Technology](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/netaji-subhas-university-of-technology/). [National Institute Of Technology Silchar](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/national-institute-of-technology-silchar/) in the north-east brings the national institutes of technology into the picture. Both have a modest presence here.

A further group of universities widens the academic base beyond technical institutes. [Jadavpur University](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/jadavpur-university/) in Kolkata appears with a small body of cited work. So do the universities named after Ambedkar: Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar University in Agra and [Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/babasaheb-bhimrao-ambedkar-university/) in Lucknow. Both have few papers in our library but notable citation for their size. The [University of Petroleum and Energy Studies](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/university-of-petroleum-and-energy-studies/) in Dehradun, whose name ties it to the energy sector, closes the list with a small presence.

### Industry laboratories

Companies stand out in the Indian listing to an unusual degree. [Microsoft Research (India)](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/companies/microsoft-research/), based in Bengaluru, is the first entry overall, ahead of every university. It is listed with a compact set of works that have been widely cited. A separate entry, [Microsoft (India)](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/companies/microsoft-india/) in Hyderabad, also ranks high. Between them, the Microsoft entries account for a prominent share of the cited Indian work in our library.

IBM is likewise represented by more than one entry. [IBM (India)](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/companies/ibm-india/) is a company entry in Bengaluru. [IBM Research - India](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/labs/ibm-research-india/) in New Delhi is the only organisation in the Indian list classed as a research institute rather than a university or company. Both sit in the middle of the order with comparable bodies of work.

Other firms complete the industrial picture. Robert Bosch (India) in Bengaluru is linked to very few works, but these are among the most heavily cited associated with any Indian institution here. [Wipro](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/companies/wipro/), also in Bengaluru, appears with a small but well-cited set of papers. [Tata Consultancy Services](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/companies/tata-consultancy-services/) in Pune has a smaller footprint.

The weight of these corporate entries is a defining trait of India's profile in this library. Company research groups here do not trail the universities; several of them sit near the top of the order.

### Geography

The institutions cluster in a few cities. Bengaluru is the most frequent location, home to the Microsoft Research and IBM company entries, Robert Bosch (India), Wipro and the Indian Institute of Science. That concentration makes the city the main centre of Indian research on this site, especially in industry.

The Delhi region is the second cluster. It holds IIT Delhi, IBM Research - India, Netaji Subhas University of Technology and Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology Delhi.

Hyderabad hosts both the International Institute of Information Technology and the Microsoft (India) entry. Mumbai has IIT Bombay and the IITB-Monash Research Academy. Chennai, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Patna and Varanasi each hold an IIT campus. Pilani, Agra, Lucknow, Kolkata, Silchar, Pune and Dehradun each hold a single listed institution.

The spread runs from the far north-east, at Silchar, to the south, at Chennai and Bengaluru. Even so, most of the cited work comes from a handful of large metropolitan centres.

### Collaborations

The listing does not chart co-authorship directly, but one entry signals an international partnership by its name. The [IITB-Monash Research Academy](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/iitb-monash-research-academy/) in Mumbai is listed as a university in its own right. Its name ties it to IIT Bombay and to Monash, so it represents a joint research arrangement, and it has a reasonable body of cited work in our library.

The parallel entries for Microsoft and IBM show something similar: research by global companies is carried out and credited at Indian sites. Indian affiliations in this library are therefore often connected to wider international organisations.

The individual institution entries show more about who works with whom, listing the scientists, works and partner organisations linked to each.

### Reading the list

A few points help in reading the Indian listing. The order reflects cited work done at each institution, not the number of papers, so an institution with few works can stand above one with many, as the Microsoft and IIT entries show.

Very large citation figures for a few works also do not automatically lift an institution to the top, as the positions of Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani and of Robert Bosch (India) make clear.

Finally, the list covers only what this library holds. It grows as papers are added, so placings and the set of institutions can change.

Within those limits, India appears here mainly as a centre of technical and computing research. It combines national institutes of technology, specialised information-technology institutes and a prominent group of industry laboratories, with Bengaluru, Delhi and Hyderabad at its core.
