## About

### Profile

Norway appears in this library as a country listing that gathers the research institutions whose scientists have contributed more than one paper to the collection. The listing is a directory rather than a single body. It shows which Norwegian organisations are present among the works in our library, where they are located, and how they compare in the cited work their researchers produced while affiliated with them. It sits within the library's wider directory of [research institutions](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/orgs/), which can be browsed across all kinds of organisations and all countries.

Five institutions qualify for the Norwegian listing. All five are classified as universities. They are spread across four cities: Oslo, Trondheim, Tromsø and Bergen. Oslo is the only city with two entries. The institutions are the [University of Oslo](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/university-of-oslo/), the [Norwegian University of Science and Technology](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/norwegian-university-of-science-and-technology/), [UiT The Arctic University of Norway](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/uit-the-arctic-university-of-norway/), the [University of Bergen](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/university-of-bergen/) and [Fjellhaug Internasjonale Høgskole](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/fjellhaug-internasjonale-hogskole/). Each has its own entry in the library, where its works, people and topics can be followed in more detail.

Everything said below concerns Norway as it is represented on this site. The library holds a selection of scientific papers. The picture of Norwegian research here reflects that selection. It is not a survey of the country's research system as a whole.

### How the institutions are ordered

The Norwegian listing ranks its institutions by the citations attracted by work their scientists did while based there. The order therefore reflects how much attention the papers have drawn in the scholarly literature. It does not reflect how many papers an institution has contributed, and it is not a judgement of quality. The difference matters in the Norwegian case. One institution near the bottom of the ranking contributes more papers than some of those placed above it.

Read this way, the list falls into three broad groups. At the top, by a wide margin, stands the University of Oslo. It is the largest contributor of works among the Norwegian institutions here, and its work has drawn the most citations. In the middle are three universities with a smaller number of works each, all of which have nonetheless been cited substantially. These are the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, UiT The Arctic University of Norway and the University of Bergen. Last comes Fjellhaug Internasjonale Høgskole. It has contributed several works, but they have so far received comparatively little citation.

### Research strengths

The country listing does not break Norwegian research down by field or topic. That information belongs to the individual institutional entries. What the listing does show is where the cited work is concentrated. That alone says something about the shape of Norway's presence among the works here.

The strongest concentration is plainly in Oslo. The University of Oslo accounts for most of the cited work in the Norwegian listing. Its contribution is also the broadest, measured by the number of papers. Readers who want to know which subjects drive that position should turn to the university's own entry, which lists its works, its scientists and its topics.

The three universities in the middle tier show a different pattern. Each contributes only a few works, yet each has accumulated a considerable body of citations. Their papers have therefore been cited heavily relative to their number. This is especially clear for the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim. It ranks second in the country despite contributing far fewer papers than the University of Oslo. UiT The Arctic University of Norway in Tromsø and the University of Bergen follow closely behind one another. Each has a small set of works that has drawn well-established attention.

Fjellhaug Internasjonale Høgskole, the second Oslo institution, shows the reverse. Its output on this site is larger than that of several institutions ranked above it. The citations attached to that output, however, are few. Several explanations are possible. The papers may be recent. They may belong to fields where citation is less common. They may simply not yet have found a wide readership. The listing itself does not say which applies.

### Leading institutions

The country listing names institutions rather than individual scientists. The researchers associated with each organisation appear on that organisation's own entry. This section therefore follows the order in which the institutions are listed for Norway.

The University of Oslo comes first. It is a university based in Oslo, and it holds the top position both in cited work and in the number of works contributed. Among Norwegian institutions on this site, it is the main source of papers and of the attention those papers have received. Its entry is the natural starting point for anyone exploring Norwegian research in the library.

The Norwegian University of Science and Technology comes second. It is a university located in Trondheim. Its few works here have together gathered a large body of citations. That places it clearly ahead of the remaining institutions, though well behind the University of Oslo.

UiT The Arctic University of Norway is third. It is based in Tromsø, the northernmost of the cities in the listing. It contributes a small number of works, and they have been cited substantially. That is enough to place it above the University of Bergen.

The University of Bergen is fourth. It is based in Bergen and contributes a number of works comparable to that of UiT The Arctic University of Norway. Its citation total is somewhat lower, so the two sit next to each other in the ranking with Tromsø slightly ahead.

Fjellhaug Internasjonale Høgskole is fifth. Like the University of Oslo, it is located in Oslo and is classified as a university. Its place at the end of the list reflects the low citation count of its works rather than a lack of output.

### Landmark works

The country listing does not itself present individual papers, so it does not single out particular works as the most cited from Norway. Those works appear on the entries of the institutions where they were produced. The distribution of citations still shows where such papers are most likely to be found. Most of Norway's cited work in our library comes from the University of Oslo, so the most-cited Norwegian papers in the library are most likely to be found among that university's works. The Norwegian University of Science and Technology is the next most likely source. Its small set of works has drawn a heavy share of attention, which suggests that at least some of its papers are cited particularly often.

For UiT The Arctic University of Norway and the University of Bergen, the same reasoning applies on a smaller scale. A few works account for a considerable volume of citations at each. That points to individual papers of notable reach, which can be identified on the respective institutional entries.

### Geography

The four cities in the listing cover much of the length of the country. Oslo has two institutions here, the University of Oslo and Fjellhaug Internasjonale Høgskole, and together they hold the largest share of Norwegian works in our library. Trondheim is represented by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Bergen by the University of Bergen, and Tromsø, in the far north, by UiT The Arctic University of Norway.

The geographic spread is wide, but the cited work is not spread evenly. The capital dominates through the University of Oslo. Trondheim forms a clear second centre. Tromsø and Bergen each contribute a smaller but substantial share. The presence of two Oslo institutions with very different citation profiles shows that location alone does not decide how much attention an institution's work receives.

### Collaborations

The country listing does not describe partnerships between Norwegian institutions or with organisations abroad. Any such links would appear on the individual institutional entries, through shared works and co-authors. A reader interested in how Norwegian universities work with one another, or with partners in other countries, should look there. A first step is to compare the works listed under the University of Oslo with those of the other four institutions.

### Over time

The Norwegian listing gives no years for the works it summarises. It therefore cannot show how Norway's presence in the library has grown or shifted over time. Dated information belongs to the institutional entries, where each work is listed individually. As the library adds papers, the composition of the Norwegian listing may change. Institutions may enter once they have contributed more than one paper, and the order may shift as citations accumulate.

### Using this listing

The Norwegian listing is best read as a map. It shows which universities in Norway are represented among the works in our library, how they are spread across the country, and where the cited work is concentrated. It does not describe any field or individual researcher. For those details, each of the five institutions has its own entry. The wider directory of organisations allows Norway to be set alongside other countries represented in the library.
