## About

### Profile

This entry covers [Russia](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/orgs/country/ru/) as a country of research institutions. It brings together the universities, laboratories, companies and public bodies in Russia whose researchers have written at least two of the papers held in the library. The entry is a directory. It shows which Russian institutions appear among the works in our library, where they are, what kind of body each is, and how much cited work their scientists did there. It does not give a history of Russian science, and it says nothing about Russian institutions that have published little or nothing in this collection.

The list is ordered by the cited work produced by each institution's scientists while working there. The order therefore reflects how this collection sees each institution's research, not its size, age or standing in Russia as a whole. Institutions of every kind on this site can be browsed from the general [organisations index](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/orgs/), which places the Russian entries alongside those of other countries.

### The shape of the list

The Russian institutions here vary widely in type. Most are universities, but the list also includes a technology company, a government body and two research institutes. This mix shows that, on this site, Russian research does not come only from teaching universities. Industry and the academy-style institute system both appear among the authors' affiliations.

Geographically the list is concentrated in Moscow. The university at the head of the list is in Moscow. So are the largest company on the list, the oldest-sounding classical university, the national academy, both research institutes and a humanities university. The other entries are spread around the capital and beyond it. Two technology-oriented universities sit just outside the city, in Skolkovo and Dolgoprudny. One university is in St Petersburg. Two more are in the Republic of Tatarstan region, at Innopolis and Kazan’. Among the works here, Russian research is therefore centred on the Moscow area, with a few further points in the north-west and along the Volga.

### Research strengths

The directory does not list topics or individual works for the country as a whole. The clearest guide to the fields covered is the set of institutions themselves, and their names and types suggest a few broad groupings. These should be read as indications of where the Russian work in our library comes from, not as a full map of its subjects.

One grouping is technical and computational. It includes the [Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/skolkovo-institute-of-science-and-technology/), the [Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/moscow-institute-of-physics-and-technology/), [ITMO University](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/itmo-university/) and [Innopolis University](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/innopolis-university/), all named as science and technology schools. The company [Yandex](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/companies/yandex/) belongs with them as the one industrial entry. Together these bodies account for a large share of the Russian institutions on the list. Their presence suggests that much of the Russian work in the library comes from engineering, physics and technology settings.

A second grouping is in the humanities and the study of language and culture. It includes the [Institute of Linguistics](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/labs/institute-of-linguistics/), the [Institute of Oriental Studies](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/labs/institute-of-oriental-studies/) and the [Russian State University for the Humanities](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/russian-state-university-for-the-humanities/). Their names point to research on language, on the societies and texts of the East, and on the humanities more broadly. All three are in Moscow. Their works in our library have so far drawn little citation compared with the technical institutions. Even so, their presence shows that the Russian material here is not limited to the sciences.

A third grouping is made up of broad, many-faculty institutions whose names do not tie them to any single field. These are the [National Research University Higher School of Economics](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/national-research-university-higher-school-of-economics/), [Lomonosov Moscow State University](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/lomonosov-moscow-state-university/) and [Kazan Federal University](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/universities/kazan-federal-university/). The national [Russian Academy of Sciences](https://md.research.elamur.ai/free/en/government/russian-academy-of-sciences/) also spans many disciplines. The directory alone does not show which of their departments wrote the works here; each institution's own entry gives that detail.

### The institutions in order

The National Research University Higher School of Economics, a university in Moscow, heads the list. Among the Russian institutions on this site it has the most works and by far the largest body of cited research. Its total is well above that of any other Russian entry. In this collection it is the main Russian contributor of work that other papers go on to cite.

The Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology, a university in Skolkovo, comes second. Its works in our library are few and modestly cited. Its place in the order shows that the ranking weighs the cited work of an institution's scientists in a way that does not simply follow its raw total. Several institutions below it have gathered more citations overall.

The Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, a university in Dolgoprudny, comes third. It has a moderate number of works here, and they have drawn substantial citation. It is one of the stronger Russian entries on this site.

Yandex, a company based in Moscow, comes fourth. It is the only commercial body on the Russian list. It has more works here than any Russian institution other than the Higher School of Economics, and its citation total is among the higher ones on the list. This places a private technology firm close to the main universities in the Russian part of the collection.

Lomonosov Moscow State University, a university in Moscow, follows. It contributes several works that have been cited well. Its total is of the same order as that of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology and Yandex. Together these three form a group clearly behind the head of the list but well ahead of the rest.

The Russian Academy of Sciences, listed as a government body in Moscow, comes next. Its few works here are modestly cited. Just after it is the Institute of Linguistics, a Moscow research institute, whose works have drawn a comparable level of citation.

ITMO University in St Petersburg and Innopolis University in Innopolis follow. Both have a small number of works in our library, and those works have so far been cited only lightly. They are the two entries that carry the list well beyond Moscow.

The last three entries are Kazan Federal University in Kazan’, the Institute of Oriental Studies in Moscow and the Russian State University for the Humanities in Moscow. Each has only a few works in the collection and so far very little citation. They mark the lower edge of the Russian institutions that pass the library's threshold for inclusion.

### Leading scientists

The country directory does not name individual researchers. The scientists behind the Russian works in our library appear on the entries of the institutions above, listed in each institution's own order. Readers looking for the people behind the most cited Russian research here should start with the entry for the National Research University Higher School of Economics. After that, the entries for the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, Yandex and Lomonosov Moscow State University are the most useful places to look.

### Landmark works

The directory also does not list individual papers, so the landmark works linked to Russia are found on the institution entries. Judged by where the cited work is concentrated, the Higher School of Economics is the most likely source of the most cited Russian papers in the collection. Yandex, the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology and Lomonosov Moscow State University are the next places to look. The works of the remaining institutions have so far drawn much less attention from later papers in our library.

### Collaborations

The country directory does not show co-authorship links between the Russian institutions, or between them and institutions abroad. Some links can be traced through the institution entries, where shared works and co-authors appear. Several of the Russian works here may well be shared between these bodies, for example between a university and the national academy, or between a university and an industrial laboratory. The directory itself does not confirm this, so the institution entries are the place to check it.

### Reading the Russian list

Three features stand out in this collection's view of Russian research. The first is concentration. A single Moscow university accounts for most of the cited Russian work here, and a small group of Moscow-area universities and one company account for most of the rest. The second is variety of type. Universities, a company, a government body and research institutes all appear, so the Russian work here comes from several parts of the research system. The third is the gap in attention between fields. The technical and broad universities and the company have drawn far more citation than the humanities institutes, although the humanities are clearly represented.

These observations describe only the papers and institutions held in this library. Russian institutions with little presence here are not included, however much they publish elsewhere. As the collection grows, the order, the citation totals and the set of institutions passing the inclusion threshold may all change. The institution entries linked above give the current detail of works, people and topics for each.
