## Summary
Instruction-following LLMs can answer questions when given retrieved passages and a task instruction, with no extra training. Their answers, however, tend to be long and padded with extra details. Standard QA metrics such as EM and F1 penalize this verbosity unfairly, and they cannot tell whether a claim is grounded in the supplied evidence.

The authors propose judging QA systems on two separate axes:
- **Correctness:** whether the user's information need is met.
- **Faithfulness:** whether the answer is supported by the given knowledge, including declining to answer when the passage is irrelevant.

They evaluated Flan-T5, Alpaca, GPT-3.5 and Llama-2 on NQ, HotpotQA and TopiOCQA. Human annotations were collected for 1800 responses and compared against many automatic metrics. Two simple lexical measures track human judgments well and come close to a costly GPT-4 evaluator: Recall for correctness and K-Precision for faithfulness.

Untuned instruction-following models rival fine-tuned systems on correctness but often hallucinate and misjudge passage relevance. The paper therefore argues against single-score reporting in favor of multi-dimensional evaluation.

## Key points
- **Datasets:** validation splits of NQ (3,610 questions), HotpotQA (7,405) and TopiOCQA (2,514), over Wikipedia collections of roughly 21M, 5.2M and 25.7M passages.
- **Models tested:** Flan-T5 (11B), Alpaca (7B), GPT-3.5-turbo and Llama-2 7B chat.
- **Trade-off between axes:** Flan-T5 scores highest on K-Precision on all three tasks. GPT-3.5 and Llama-2 are more correct but much less faithful.
- **Abstention with irrelevant passages:** when told to say "I don't know," GPT-3.5 abstains in 98% of cases on NQ and HotpotQA and 88% on TopiOCQA. Alpaca almost never abstains.
- **Over-abstention with gold passages:** Llama-2 still refuses more than half the time across all three datasets, even when given the correct passage.
- **Resources:** code and human annotations are released at github.com/McGill-NLP/instruct-qa.
