## Summary
Arabic NLP has moved quickly through pre-trained models, dialect benchmarks and cheap fine-tuning. The authors argue that research method has not kept pace. Studies often leave preprocessing, hyperparameters and dataset properties undocumented, rarely apply explainability techniques, and pay little attention to dialects. As a result, their findings are hard to reproduce or compare. The paper is a critical literature review of Arabic AI and NLP work from 2021–2026. It reports its screening flow cautiously, through a PRISMA-informed audit of the final corpus rather than a complete search log. The review finds that the field's focus is shifting from building new models toward getting the methodology right. On that basis, the authors propose a five-stage research pipeline: framing the linguistic problem, choosing and documenting resources, modeling and adaptation, evaluation with interpretation, and transparent reporting. The point is to tie computational decisions to linguistic goals and to treat AI as a tool that supports linguistic expertise rather than replacing it. The authors acknowledge that the framework is conceptual and has not yet been tested empirically.

## Key points
- The review covers 2021–2026 publications. It is labelled a critical review rather than a full systematic one, and the authors openly state that duplicate-removal and exclusion logs are missing.
- The model and resource landscape it surveys includes:
  - pre-trained models: AraBERT, ARBERT, MARBERT and AraXLNet;
  - benchmarks: ARLUE, GATmath/GATLc and Absher (Saudi Arabic);
  - resources: AlgVec embeddings for Algerian Arabic, the ARPD dataset and the MARSA sentiment corpus.
- LoRA and QLoRA lower compute costs but add variation in how studies implement and evaluate them.
- The five stages run in order: defining the linguistic question → picking resources and recording their details → building and adapting models → evaluating and interpreting results → reporting openly.
- The stated limitations are:
  - no empirical validation;
  - no numeric thresholds for reproducibility or interpretability;
  - no comparison against alternative frameworks;
  - possible publication bias and uneven coverage of dialects.

## Interesting ideas
- Name the linguistic phenomenon before choosing a model, so that the model choice serves the question rather than defining it. — For Mova (learn): Each evaluation suite could be keyed to a named phenomenon, such as passives or ellipsis, so that score changes can be read linguistically instead of as one aggregate number.
- Audit every resource for its language variety, annotation protocol, preprocessing and known limitations before using it. — For Mova (tree): A short datasheet per treebank and per UD dialect conversion would explain parser differences across sources and make conversion choices traceable.
- Stratify sampling and evaluation by variety, because pooled scores conceal large gaps between under-represented varieties and the standard one. — For Mova (answer): Results for school tests, word problems and fables could be reported per genre and register, so that weak areas are not hidden by easy ones.
- Choose an adaptation strategy by the linguistic objective and state the reason, rather than defaulting to the biggest model. — For Mova (tree): Recording why a task uses the perceptron parser or gparse would keep the decision explainable and revisitable.
- Report pipeline provenance conservatively, claiming only what can be verified from surviving records and stating openly which logs are missing. — For Mova (learn): Silver-data batches could carry a provenance record of which witness parsers agreed and which steps went unlogged, so that downstream claims stay honest.
