## Summary

This survey by researchers from Meta AI examines the idea that a large pretrained language model can serve as a knowledge base. When trained on large web corpora without any manual annotation, such models store many facts in their weights. Classical KBs such as Wikidata or ATOMIC, by contrast, store knowledge as explicit triples. This makes them easy to query and update, and their answers are predictable. The authors do not propose a new dataset or model. Instead, they describe five properties that an LM needs before it can fully replace a KB: access to knowledge, editing, consistency, reasoning, and explainability and interpretability. They organize recent work along these axes. Their main conclusion is that progress is clear, but models still answer paraphrased questions differently, are hard to update one fact at a time, and remain "black boxes." The survey is useful as a map of this fast-growing field and as a list of open problems. Until these problems are solved, LMs should not be used as a reliable source of facts.

## Key points

- **Five aspects of LMs-as-KBs:** Access, Edit, Consistency, Reasoning, Explainability/Interpretability. The authors treat Petroni et al. (2019) as the starting point of this research direction.
- **Access to knowledge.** Knowledge is extracted from BERT, GPT-3, BART, T5 through cloze queries such as "Albert Einstein was born in [MASK]", through prompting, or through fine-tuning. Different phrasings of the same query can produce different answers.
- **Editing.** Retraining the whole model is too expensive, and changing individual weights affects other facts the model has memorized. The survey describes methods for targeted editing (De Cao et al., Mitchell et al.) and causal tracing (Meng et al., 2022). Causal tracing builds on the finding by Geva et al. (2021) that feedforward layers behave like key–value memories.
- **Explainability.** The survey covers attention, influence functions, and explanations generated by the model itself (T5). Model-generated explanations often contradict one another (Camburu et al., 2020).
- **Open problems.** To answer paraphrases consistently, a model needs separate additional fine-tuning (Elazar et al., 2021). Models are sensitive to negation and word order, and they handle time, causality and rare facts poorly. The authors keep an up-to-date list of papers at https://bkhmsi.github.io/lms-as-kbs/.
