## Summary
This is not a single paper but the proceedings of the workshop "Grammar Engineering and Evaluation", held at the COLING 2002 conference. The provided text contains only the table of contents, so the results of the individual papers are not described here. The common theme of the workshop is how to build, maintain, reuse and evaluate large natural-language grammars that provide broad coverage of texts. The papers address several directions. The first is multilingual parallel projects in which grammars for different languages are built according to shared principles (ParGram, Grammar Matrix). The second is the adaptation of existing grammars in the XLE environment. The third is the automatic extraction of grammars from treebanks and the correction of their flaws. The papers also discuss the interaction of grammar and lexicon in robust parsing of Italian, a classification of grammar development strategies, and tools for large multilingual parsers. Machine translation as a way to test parsing quality is considered separately. For Mova, the proceedings are useful as an overview of early grammar engineering practices. Their ideas are applicable to building rule-based or hybrid resources for Ukrainian.

## Key points
- The COLING 2002 workshop contains 10 papers on grammar development and evaluation.
- Grammar Matrix (Bender, Flickinger, Oepen) is an open starter kit for the rapid development of precise broad-coverage grammars that are consistent across languages.
- Parallel Grammar Project (Butt, Dyvik, King, Masuichi, Rohrer) is the parallel development of LFG grammars for several languages. Kaplan, King and Maxwell describe their experience adapting existing grammars in the XLE environment.
- Prolo analyzes the problems of grammars automatically extracted from treebanks. Kinyon and Prolo propose a classification of grammar development strategies.
- Other topics: robust parsing of Italian combining grammar and lexicon (Bartolini et al.); machine translation as a testbed for multilingual parsing (Campbell et al.); an environment for developing large multilingual parsers (Suzuki).
