## Summary
A search query alone often hides what the user actually wants. The same query might call for code, an answer, or a duplicate question. Usually this is handled by training a separate retriever for each intent. Asai et al. instead propose "retrieval with instructions," where a natural-language description of the search task accompanies the query.

To support this, they built BERRI, a unified collection of 37 retrieval datasets across 10 domains. Some of these datasets were originally non-retrieval tasks recast as retrieval. Experts annotated each task with instructions that specify intent, domain and unit.

On BERRI they trained TART, a single multi-task retriever, in two variants: a dual-encoder (TART-dual) and a cross-encoder (TART-full). Training used hard negatives and new "instruction-unfollowing" negatives. TART-full set new state-of-the-art results on zero-shot BEIR and LOTTE, beating systems roughly three times larger. It also led on X²-Retrieval, a new pooled cross-task, cross-domain setup.

The work matters because one instruction-following model can replace many task-specific retrievers and adapt to new tasks without parameter updates.

## Key points
- **BERRI dataset:** 37 datasets were selected from over 60 candidates, drawn from KILT, the Sentence-Transformers embedding training data, ACL Anthology and Hugging Face. On average, each task has about 3.5 expert-written instructions, totaling more than 100.
- **Instruction schema:** every instruction states three things:
  - the intent (how the target text relates to the query),
  - the domain (e.g., Wikipedia, PubMed),
  - the unit (e.g., sentence, paragraph).
- **Model variants:** TART-dual is a dense dual-encoder with about 110M parameters. TART-full is a cross-encoder built on T5 LM-Adapt (base, large and XL) that reranks the top 100 Contriever results. Larger sizes performed clearly better.
- **Ablations:**
  - Removing instructions at training or test time hurts results.
  - Dropping instruction-unfollowing negatives leaves BEIR performance roughly unchanged but lowers X²-Retrieval performance.
  - Training on more datasets helps.
- **Limitations and release:** TART-dual sometimes falls behind its non-instruction counterpart. Code and models are released at github.com/facebookresearch/tart.
