## Summary
Arabic is highly inflective and derivative, so a sense inventory keyed on full word forms misses most words seen at runtime. Thesauri list on the order of 10^4.5 entries, while inflection and derivation can generate about 10^7 forms. The authors, at RDI in Egypt, built an Arabic lexical semantics LR that avoids this problem. Its starting point is the Grand Thesaurus, which is grounded in the theory of semantic fields. Instead of storing words, the LR stores lexical compounds made of morpheme codes from RDI's morphological model (prefix, root, pattern, suffix). These compounds can be matched loosely: a slot can require an exact morpheme, any morpheme carrying a given PoS tag, or nothing at all. Each compound maps to one or more of about 1,800 semantic fields, and those fields are linked by 20 standard semantic relations. A morphological analyzer and PoS tagger run at lookup time and connect input words to compounds. If nothing matches, the lookup falls back to the semantic fields of the root. The result is a compact relational DB that retrieves candidate senses for almost any Arabic word. Sense disambiguation is deliberately left to applications.

## Key points
- The LR has four parts:
  - a fixed set of semantic fields;
  - a forward and inverse RDB mapping lexical compounds to fields, one-to-many;
  - a set of standard relations, such as antonymy, hyponymy and entailment;
  - an RDB linking fields through zero or more relations.
- The LR was derived from the 2002 Grand Thesaurus compiled by Mukhtaar Umar and colleagues, which holds more than 35,000 entries and about 1,800 fields. The final LR has about 40,000 entries and 1,824 fields.
- RDI's morphological model represents each word as a quadruple (t: p, r, f, s).
  - It uses about 7,800 morphemes in 9 categories.
  - It reaches over 99.8% dynamic coverage on large corpora, excluding transliterated words.
  - The PoS tagset has only 62 atomic tags.
- Compounds are encoded as follows:
  - an explicit morpheme code means that exact morpheme is required;
  - a negated PoS code means any morpheme with that tag is accepted;
  - −1000 is a don't-care value for a semantically neutral slot.
- Comparison with AWN (beta, 2007):
  - AWN has about 12,038 entries, 5,861 fields, hyponymy only, no back-off, and links to other WordNets.
  - The new LR has 20 relations and root back-off, but no cross-language mapping.
  - The budget was under 100 man-months over 2 years.

## Interesting ideas
- Key sense entries on underspecified morphological patterns, with slots that are exact, PoS-class-only, or wildcard, instead of on surface strings; this lets a small table cover a very large set of forms.
- When no exact lexical match exists, back off to the senses of the underlying root, giving a coarser but nonempty answer instead of a miss.
- Keep a small, closed inventory of semantic fields and define relations between fields rather than between words; the number of relation entries then stays manageable and words become related indirectly.
- Keep the resource context-free: it lists all possible senses and leaves disambiguation to a separate downstream layer.
- Store both a forward (word→fields) and an inverse (fields→words) table of the same mapping, serving analysis and generation from one resource.

## For Mova

How these ideas could serve Mova, our small open language model — its files, stages and tests:

- **I1** (world): Verb-class and WordNet lookups could be keyed on lemma plus constrained features (e.g., particle, voice, nominalization suffix), so that derived forms like "-ation" or "-er" inherit senses without separate entries.
- **I2** (world): Unknown derived words could fall back to the frames and ontology classes of their base lemma, with a flag marking the result as inferred so the explanation stays honest.
- **I3** (world): The knowledge graph could store antonymy and entailment at the field or synset-cluster level, which reduces curation cost and makes each inference traceable to one field-level fact.
- **I4** (frames): The prag crate could take an explicit candidate-sense set from the lexicon and choose among them using the UD tree and roles, so each sense choice stays inspectable.
- **I5** (back): Generation and the text→graph→text compressor could use the inverse index to find surface forms for a meaning node, with the same morphological constraints guiding inflection.
