## Summary
This is a theoretical, cognitive-semantic study of English motion verbs. It does not use a corpus, a treebank, or an evaluation metric. The authors begin with the motion-verb group from B. Levin's 1993 classification. They argue that existing verb taxonomies (Vendler, Wierzbicka, Dowty, Chafe, Fillmore, Levin) keep subdividing this part of the lexicon without producing a clean, qualitative categorisation. Their alternative is a fine-grained decomposition of each verb into two layers. The first is a root seme that carries the core meaning of the situation. The second is a set of extra semes that context adds for functional, stylistic or socio-psychological reasons. From this they introduce "allosemants": positional, context-bound variants of a polysemous verb. They also compare how verb-framed and satellite-framed motion events are built. In the satellite-framed type they see a word-formation pattern based on cognitive compression, where MANNER, PATH or INSTRUMENT is folded into the verb itself. This gives a view of how the English motion lexicon grows.

## Key points
- The source material is the motion-verb group from Levin (1993). The paper also cites Kipper et al. (2008), the large-scale verb classification behind VerbNet.
- The paper reviews Talmy's motion event components: Figure, Ground, activating process/Direction, and association function. It prefers Verkerk's (2015) definition: a mover travelling along a path relative to a ground, goal, source or other reference point.
- English "motion" is split into two prototype semes:
  - 'move', meaning displacement, as in *go* and *run*;
  - 'action', meaning a movement performed as part of an action, as in *put*, *wave* and *take*.
- The paper takes over Zlatev's (2003) seven spatial categories: the moving entity (Trajector), the entity it is situated against (Landmark), the Motion itself, the Frame of Reference, the Region, the Path, and the Direction. The paper also discusses deictic versus allocentric orientation, for example *come to me* versus *come near the earth*.
- The new concepts are:
  - root seme;
  - allosemant;
  - cognitive compression as a word-formation mechanism;
  - incorporation of the MANNER, PATH and INSTRUMENT frame components into the verb.

## Interesting ideas
- Separate a verb's invariant root meaning from context-added semes, so one lexical entry yields predictable contextual variants instead of a flat list of unrelated senses.
- Distinguish "displacement" motion (*go*, *run*) from "movement as part of an action" (*put*, *wave*), since only the first changes the mover's location.
- Treat verbs that have absorbed MANNER, PATH or INSTRUMENT as compressed frames that can be unpacked into the full motion event.
- Make verb-framed versus satellite-framed encoding explicit: path is carried by the verb in one case and by a particle or preposition in the other.
- Keep deictic and allocentric orientation of the trajector distinct, as with *come to me* versus *come near the earth*.

## For Mova

How these ideas could serve Mova, our small open language model — its files, stages and tests:

- **I1** (frames): Frame assignment could fix the root frame from the VerbNet class first, then attach manner, style or intent features from the context as explainable modifiers.
- **I2** (world): The world builder could update an entity's location only for displacement verbs, and treat action-motion verbs as changes to the object or holding rather than to the agent's position.
- **I3** (world): Compiled verb-class knowledge could store which frame slot a verb has incorporated, so that a verb whose meaning includes a means or instrument fills that role implicitly in the world model.
- **I4** (back): Generation and translation through the meta-world could choose between "enter the room" and "go into the room" by deciding where to realise PATH, which keeps paraphrases faithful.
- **I5** (frames): Pragmatics could resolve the goal of *come* or *go* relative to the speaker or narrator when the orientation is deictic, and to a fixed landmark otherwise.
