## Summary
The authors tackle ArAIEval 2024 Task 1, which asks systems to find which stretches of Arabic tweets and news paragraphs use persuasion or propaganda techniques and to name the technique for each stretch. They reframe the problem as token-level sequence labelling. The character offsets of each labelled span become BIO tags per technique, and an AraBERT-base encoder with a linear-plus-softmax head assigns a tag to every subword. Training runs in two stages. First the pre-trained encoder is frozen and only the head is fitted. Then all weights are unfrozen and updated jointly. Among several Arabic and multilingual BERT variants, AraBERTv2 gave the best development scores. The submitted system reached a micro-F1 of 0.2774 on the test set, which placed third on the leaderboard. The very low macro-F1 values show that rare techniques remain largely undetected. The work offers a simple, reproducible baseline for span-level persuasion detection in a morphologically rich, dialect-heavy language with little annotated data.

## Key points
- The ArAIEval Task 1 data has 6,997 training, 921 validation and 1,046 test snippets annotated with 23 techniques. The labels are heavily skewed: "Loaded Language" accounts for 55.69% of spans, "Name Calling Labeling" for 14.23% and "Exaggeration-Minimisation" for 6.83%.
- Fine-tuning ran in two phases with batch size 32:
  - 10 epochs training only the head, at learning rate 2e-5.
  - 5 epochs of full fine-tuning, at learning rate 1e-5.
  - Training took about 6 hours on one RTX 2080 Ti.
- On the development set, AraBERTv2 scored micro-F1 0.277 and macro-F1 0.058. The other models scored lower on micro-F1:
  - Original AraBERT: 0.237.
  - CAMeLBERT-da: 0.199.
  - A multilingual model reported as mBERT in the table (named MARBERT in the text): 0.130.
- On the official test set the system reached precision 0.2446 and recall 0.3202, for a micro-F1 of 0.2774. This ranked third, behind CUET_sstm (0.2995) and Mela (0.2833); a random baseline scored 0.0151.
- In error analysis, context-dependent techniques such as "Whataboutism" were frequently missed. The model also often confused "Loaded Language" with "Name Calling/Labeling", since both depend on emotionally charged wording.

## Interesting ideas
- The encoder is frozen first while a fresh head learns to map stable pretrained features onto labels, and only then is the whole network unfrozen at a lower rate; this keeps the noisy early gradients of a random head from damaging pretrained weights.
- Character-offset span annotations are converted into per-technique BIO tags on subword tokens, which reduces overlapping span detection to ordinary sequence tagging.
- Micro-F1 and macro-F1 are reported side by side, and the large gap between them shows that a good-looking headline score can hide near-zero performance on rare classes.
- The error analysis groups mistakes by label pairs that share surface cues, such as pejorative words that fit two techniques, rather than just listing per-class scores.
- After the deadline, adding part-of-speech and named-entity features helped separate techniques that look alike (reported only as unofficial results).

## For Mova

How these ideas could serve Mova, our small open language model — its files, stages and tests:

- **I1** (tree): gparse could warm up new arc/label heads on a frozen transformer before full fine-tuning, which is useful when adding a new UD treebank or dialect with few sentences.
- **I2** (frames): spans of speech acts or irony cues in prag could be stored as offsets and projected onto tokens via BIO, making every flagged token traceable back to its annotated span.
- **I3** (learn): evaluation reports for deprels, frame roles or speech-act classes should always pair micro and macro scores, so that skewed labels cannot mask failures on rare categories.
- **I4** (frames): a confusion review of semantically adjacent prag categories (e.g. sarcasm vs. plain negative evaluation) could point to where explicit, explainable disambiguation rules are needed.
- **I5** (frames): pragmatic classifiers in prag could draw on the UD tree and entity types already produced upstream, instead of relying on surface words alone.
