## Summary
The paper asks what Phoenician and Punic borrowings in Berber vocabulary reveal about when the Berber dialect continuum broke up into its attested languages. Blažek builds an inventory of about two dozen probable Canaanite loans, starting from earlier comparisons by Werner Vycichl and Otto Rössler. For each item he reconstructs a Common Berber form and lists reflexes across the North, East, South (Tuareg) and West branches, with dictionary sources for each. He sets these against Phoenician, Punic or Hebrew sources and their Semitic cognates, and he separates out later Arabic borrowings of the same words.

The key evidence is distribution. Several loans appear in the West branch (Zenaga, Kwarandzyey) as well as in the northern languages. This suggests that Phoenician contact began before the continuum split. The relative result fits an absolute timeline: contact from about 800 BCE, with the breakup dated to 680–460 BCE by recalibrated glottochronology. Proposed breakup dates in the second millennium BCE then look too early.

## Key points
- The inventory has 22 numbered loans, with sub-entries 9a–9c for "cucumber" and "field of cucumbers". Examples include *ā-b[i]ẓālīm "onion", *ā-gādīr "wall", *ē-niHir "lamp", *ā-γānīm "reed", *ā-zātīm "olive" and *ā-taggār "merchant".
- At least 6 (possibly 7) loans are found in West Berber, and up to 19 in the northern branches.
- The first contact is placed around 800 BCE, based on the adoption of the Phoenician script and the founding of Carthage. The Berber breakup is dated to 680–460 BCE (Blažek 2010). Rival dates of 1480 BCE (G. Starostin) and c. 1300 BCE (Ajxenval'd & Militarev 1991) are judged too early.
- The loans fall into four semantic groups:
  - urban and commercial life ("wall", "be courteous", "merchant");
  - newer technology and materials ("oil lamp", "copper", "axe", "hoe", "alum");
  - cultivated plants and food;
  - sacral speech ("to read/call", "to learn").
- Item #3 "to move" fits none of these groups, and it may be a native inherited word rather than a loan.

## Interesting ideas
- An item that appears in every branch of a family must predate the split, so where a feature occurs becomes evidence of its age. — For Mova (learn): when several witness parsers agree on an analysis despite having different training histories, that agreement can be treated as evidence the analysis comes from the shared signal, not from one parser's quirk.
- The author warns that a word missing from a language may only mean that language's dictionary is thin, so evidence is weighed by how well each source is documented. — For Mova (learn): when a construction is absent from a small treebank, compare its coverage with a richer one before concluding the parser has failed, as a kind of negative control.
- Old and recent loans of the same word are told apart by form: the Phoenician plural ending -îm became part of the Berber stem, while later Arabic loans keep the Arabic article al-. — For Mova (tokens): the lemmatizer could flag fossilized foreign plural endings (e.g. criteria, alumni) and frozen articles in borrowed words, so these are not split into a stem plus a productive inflection.
- Grouping the loans by meaning domain shows what kind of contact took place: trade, technology, crops and literacy. — For Mova (world): tagging a text's vocabulary by ontology domain could suggest its setting or genre, which can then guide entity and frame interpretation.
- The internal relative dating is checked against independent external anchors (script adoption, the founding of Carthage), and estimates that conflict with them are rejected. — For Mova (answer): an answer about time or order of events should be checked against explicitly anchored dates in the text before it is returned.
