## Summary
The authors address a practical gap for Arabic language teachers: finding a text that suits a lesson is hard, because existing tools rely on plain keyword search and Arabic teaching software tends to be static. They propose pedagogical indexing, which means describing texts by teaching-relevant facets rather than by keywords alone. These facets are derived from the pedagogical context: course objective, learner level and comprehension, native vs. foreign language, text length, target linguistic elements, and vocabulary unknown to the learner. A questionnaire of 60 teachers showed that they classify texts mainly by purpose, content and level, and that they prefer short texts. The paper surveys traits of Arabic that complicate automatic processing, such as inflection, vowel diacritics, agglutinated clitics and pro-drop subjects. It then examines the LOM metadata standard and its application profiles. Its main finding is that LOM can accommodate Arabic-specific text descriptors without modification, because all LOM elements are optional and the "educational" category contains a free "description" element. A prototype lets students practise exercises and lets teachers turn selected texts into exercises.

## Key points
- A survey of 60 Arabic teachers working with pupils aged 7–18 (primary to secondary) found that purpose, content and level were the most common classification criteria, and that teachers often write their own texts to control grammar and vocabulary.
- Arabic properties highlighted as obstacles for automatic analysis are inflection with case endings (NOM/ACC/GEN), vowel marks that disambiguate otherwise identical forms, proclitic + stem + enclitic segmentation ambiguity, and omitted subject pronouns recovered through verb agreement.
- The paper adopts the Khoja tagset, which builds on Haywood's subdivisions and has five top classes: noun, verb, particle, residual and punctuation, each with subclasses.
- LOM can host Arabic text facets through the "description" element of its "educational" category, since every LOM element is optional.
- The prototype is UTF-8 encoded and offers several exercise types: fill-in-the-blank, multiple choice and question/answer. It marks answers green or red and draws each new exercise from the matching collection while excluding exercises already shown.

## Interesting ideas
- The teaching situation is turned into computed facets, such as the target element (e.g., past-tense triliteral verbs), text length and unfamiliar vocabulary, and these facets are matched against an indexed text base; this gives retrieval a goal rather than keywords.
- In fill-in-the-blank exercises, the answer options are drawn from the same fine-grained class as the correct answer (e.g., other prepositions of the same subtype), which makes distractors plausible and diagnostic.
- Indexing is split into a hybrid workflow: the system automates the tedious analyses and leaves to a human only what cannot be derived, such as author or title.
- Instead of extending or forking the standard, the authors fit language-specific descriptors into an existing optional free-text slot, so the result stays fully compliant with LOM.
- Verb agreement in person, number and gender is used to recover a subject that is not written.

## For Mova

How these ideas could serve Mova, our small open language model — its files, stages and tests:

- **I1** (answer): School-course tests and fable QA items could be indexed by the constructions and vocabulary they exercise, so readers get evaluated on targeted phenomena rather than on random texts.
- **I2** (learn): Negative controls could be built by swapping a word for others of the same POS/subclass, testing whether the parser or reader relies on real structure instead of surface cues.
- **I3** (learn): Silver-data pipelines could follow the same split, sending to LLM teacher tiers or humans only the decisions that the witness parsers cannot settle automatically.
- **I4** (tree): Extra morphological or dialect-conversion information could live in UD's MISC/FEATS slots, keeping trees valid CoNLL-U while carrying Mova-specific annotation.
- **I5** (frames): Implicit agents in imperatives, coordinated clauses or ellipsis could be filled from agreement and context cues, with the recovered argument marked explicitly as inferred so it stays explainable.
