## Summary
Arabic language teachers have trouble finding classroom texts that fit a particular lesson. The existing CALL tools for Arabic are mostly static, and keyword search does not capture what a teacher needs. The authors propose a model for a text database in which every text is indexed pedagogically, meaning by properties that matter in teaching rather than by topic words. The model combines the IEEE LOM metadata standard and its application profiles (Normetic, Celebrate and others) with descriptors of the teaching situation: learner level, comprehension level, whether Arabic is native or foreign, course objective, text length, the target grammatical elements present, and structures still unfamiliar to the learner. The design accounts for the inflection, vocalization and agglutination of Arabic. Indexing is hybrid: teachers enter what cannot be derived automatically, and the system handles the tedious analysis. A teacher questionnaire grounds the design, and a prototype returns matching texts together with exercise scripts. The work matters because it treats retrieval for teaching as a problem of matching a text to a teaching context.

## Key points
- LOM was published in 2002 by the IEEE LTSC in four parts (IEEE 1484.12.1–1484.12.4: conceptual model, ISO/IEC 11,404 binding, XML Schema, RDF binding).
- LOM has nine categories and 78 elements arranged in a three-level tree, with 59 independent information fields. Every element is optional, so the standard has to be narrowed down through application profiles.
- Normetic gives every element one of four obligation levels: optional, recommended, required, or required only under certain conditions. Celebrate separates mandatory elements from recommended ones.
- The text properties derived from the pedagogical context are:
  - length;
  - representative elements, such as trilateral past-tense verbs for a conjugation exercise;
  - unknown vocabulary or structures, such as weak "mootalla" verbs.
- An Arabic-language teacher questionnaire (appendix) asks about:
  - where teachers find texts and how they organize them;
  - how much length matters;
  - morphology versus syntax use;
  - exercise formats: fill-in-the-blank, multiple choice, question–answer.

## Interesting ideas
- Index a text by what a lesson can do with it (target constructions, length, constructions the learner has not yet mastered) instead of by keywords, so that search follows the intended use.
- Make indexing hybrid: people supply only what the machine cannot infer, such as title and author, and the system automates the boring analysis.
- Use an application profile: take a subset of a large standard, give each element an obligation level, and add domain fields while staying interoperable with the original schema.
- Describe a text relative to the learner, by what it contains that the learner does not know yet, as in the example of a learner who knows regular trilateral verbs but not weak ones.
- Survey real practitioners before fixing the descriptor set, so the index reflects actual search habits rather than designer assumptions.

## For Mova

How these ideas could serve Mova, our small open language model — its files, stages and tests:

- **I1** (answer): School-course test passages could be tagged with the UD constructions and frame types they contain, so readers can be drilled or evaluated on specific phenomena on purpose.
- **I2** (learn): Requests to the LLM teacher tiers could be limited to fields that the parsers and witnesses cannot derive, which cuts cost and keeps the provenance of each field clear.
- **I3** (world): Each frame or entity type could get a profile over Wikidata/WordNet/FrameNet properties marking slots as mandatory, recommended, or optional, which tells the world builder which gaps to report.
- **I4** (tokens): Texts could be annotated with the morphological classes they exercise, such as irregular inflections, so lemmatizer evaluation sets target the classes the tagger has not yet covered.
- **I5** (learn): Evaluation categories could be chosen from what real question sets actually ask, which keeps metrics tied to real use.
