## Summary
Michelle P. Brown's essay (SELIM 20, printed as 2013–2014) is a literary-historical study, not an NLP paper. It challenges a habit in Old English scholarship: treating the date a manuscript was copied as the date its contents were composed. Most surviving Old English, including the four great poetic codices, was copied in the tenth to twelfth centuries. King Alfred's circle also promoted him as the pioneer of writing in English. Brown assembles cumulative evidence that the vernacular was written well before Alfred: glosses, inscriptions, remarks in Bede, and early texts that survive only in later copies. She also uses the Dream of the Rood as a model of a work that existed in several forms. She deliberately does not date Beowulf. Her conclusion is that nothing in literary history rules out an eighth-century written core that was later recited, excerpted and reworked before the Nowell Codex copy of about 1000. The methodological point is that surviving evidence is distorted by poor survival and by later self-promotion.

## Key points
- The only surviving Beowulf manuscript, the Nowell Codex, dates to c.1000–1025, and its place of origin is uncertain.
- The Leiden Riddle is an eighth-century Northumbrian rendering of Aldhelm's Enigma 33. It survives only through a tenth-century copy in Leiden, Voss. Lat. Q. 106, f. 25v.
- Lapidge (2000) traces certain scribal errors in Beowulf to misreadings of letters in an exemplar written in Anglo-Saxon set minuscule, a script used before c.750.
- Neidorf's arguments support an early date:
  - The monk "Biuuulf" is recorded in the Durham Liber Vitae (c.840).
  - For Widsið, four independent kinds of evidence agree on an early date: orthographic, lexical, onomastic and cultural.
- Cronan (2004) notes that rare words such as suhtriga, heoru and eodor are shared by Beowulf, Genesis A and early glossaries, which points to the eighth century. The poem's mixed West Saxon/Anglian dialect suggests an Anglian intermediate stage.

## Interesting ideas
- When a text was copied tells you only the latest possible date for its content, not when it was created; provenance and origin are separate variables.
- Several independent kinds of evidence that point the same way make a stronger case than any one of them alone.
- Systematic copying errors can reveal the format of a lost source, as misread letter shapes point to an older script.
- A text that mixes dialects can expose hidden intermediate stages in its transmission.
- Missing evidence should be modelled as low survival or biased recording, not read as absence.

## For Mova

How these ideas could serve Mova, our small open language model — its files, stages and tests:

- **I1** (world): The text world could store, for each fact, both when it was reported and when it actually held, so event ordering does not confuse narration time with event time.
- **I2** (learn): Silver-data acceptance could require agreement from witnesses that differ in kind (lexical, morphological, structural), not only from several parsers sharing the same biases.
- **I3** (tokens): Recurring tokenizer or tagger errors could be grouped by likely source (OCR glyph confusions, PDF hyphenation) so that repair rules target the cause instead of single tokens.
- **I4** (tree): During UD dialect conversion, mixed annotation conventions within one treebank could be flagged as a sign of layered sources and normalised separately.
- **I5** (answer): Readers answering questions on tales should separate "not stated in the text" from "false," avoiding closed-world conclusions from gaps in the record.
