## Summary
This is not an experimental study. It is the 21st yearly instalment of a reference list compiled by Bulakh, Hummel and Panini, covering linguistic publications from 2017 on the Semitic, Cushitic and Omotic languages of Ethiopia and neighbouring areas (Aethiopica 21, pp. 217–225; the issue itself is labelled 2018).

The problem it addresses is discoverability. Work on these languages is scattered across Festschriften, conference proceedings and regional journals, written in many languages and scripts. The compilers handle this in several ways:
- They group entries by family: general Afroasiatic, Ethiopian Semitic, Cushitic and Omotic.
- They define short titles for collected volumes once, at the start.
- They point co-authors to the main entry with "see" references.
- They list reviews of earlier books.
- They append an addenda section for older items missed in previous years.

Non-English titles are given with transliteration and an English gloss. Ethiopian-calendar years are converted to Gregorian ones.

No dataset, model or evaluation is involved. The value lies in a curated map of the field, which includes one directly NLP-relevant item: a part-of-speech tagset for Amharic. Part of the extracted text was omitted, so some sections are not covered here.

## Key points
- Eight collected volumes are cited by short keys, among them *Afroasiatica Romana*, *In Memoriam W. Vycichl*, *Festschrift for Getatchew Haile* and *Similative and Equative Constructions*.
- The NLP-relevant entry is Krzyżanowska's 2017 article proposing a part-of-speech tag inventory for annotating Amharic morphology and syntax, published in volume 20 of Aethiopica, pages 210–235.
- The languages covered include:
  - Semitic: Amharic, Gǝʿǝz, Tigre, Argobba, Ezha, Chaha and Siltʾe.
  - Cushitic: Somali, Beja, Oromo, Konso, Saho, Kambaata, Hadiyya and Xamtanga.
  - Omotic: Dawuro, Aari, Koorete and Hamar.
- Some works appear under two families. Hudson's paper on Agaw non-loanwords is listed under both Semitic and Cushitic, and Stolbova's paper on animal names under both Cushitic and Omotic.
- The reviews section links books such as Kogan's *Genealogical Classification of Semitic* (2015) to their 2017 reviews. The addenda add 2011–2016 items, for example Baye Yimam on Amharic wh-questions and a study of Ethiopian Sign Language.

## Interesting ideas
- Each collected volume gets a short key that is defined once, so every chapter citation stays compact and unambiguous. — For Mova (world): Knowledge-graph facts could cite their source (WordNet, FrameNet, Wikidata release) through one stable short key, keeping explanations short but traceable.
- An item that belongs to two categories is listed under both, rather than being forced into one. — For Mova (world): The ontology should allow multiple parents for a concept, so verb-class or type lookups do not miss valid inferences because of a single-category choice.
- Secondary authors get a stub entry that points to the main record instead of duplicating it. — For Mova (frames): Coreference could store aliases as explicit pointers to a canonical entity, which makes each resolution step visible in the explanation trace.
- Dates in the Ethiopian calendar keep their original form next to a converted Gregorian range, because one local year spans two Gregorian years. — For Mova (world): Values and measures could store the surface form together with a normalized interval, preserving any uncertainty instead of collapsing it to a single point.
- Late-found items go into an addenda section, and earlier editions are left unchanged. — For Mova (learn): New silver data and repair rules could be appended with provenance, while past evaluation sets stay frozen, so results remain comparable across versions.
