## Summary
Tigrinya is the third largest modern Semitic language, yet it remains under-researched. Its proverb heritage has barely been studied comparatively. Existing Tigrinya collections are mostly unexplained alphabetical lists in a single language. The author draws on his Free University of Berlin thesis about birth and death in Tigrinya proverbs. He selects proverbs and sayings and gives each an annotated comparison with semantically matching expressions from other traditions. These include Classical Hebrew, Amharic, Harari, Somali, Yoruba, Akan, Arabic dialects, Judeo-Arabic, Ladino, Kurdish, Armenian and Romansh. The comparison is organised by theme:
- Biblical borrowings
- distrust until death
- prematurity before birth
- sleep as a relative of death
- children resembling parents

For each case the paper records which variants of a proverb appear in which collections, noting differences in verb form, wording and imagery. It also points to likely sources, such as Old Testament verses. The main result is documented evidence that many Tigrinya proverbs have cross-cultural equivalents. Usually the message is shared while the pictures and protagonists differ. This gives a first step toward systematic comparative paremiology for Tigrinya.

## Key points
- Speakers began publishing Tigrinya proverb collections in the 1940s, near the end of Italian rule in Eritrea, starting with a volume of 3,300 proverbs. Later collections hold up to several thousand items.
- Only one collection is bilingual: the one by The Academy of Ethiopian Languages, which adds Amharic translations but no commentary.
- Biblical sources include Song of Songs 8:6 (love as strong as death), which keeps the loanword *siʾol* for Sheol. Another is Ezekiel 18:2 (sour grapes and the children's teeth), closest in Carlo Conti Rossini's 1942 Italian-language collection.
- The idea that sleep is "the little death" appears in Tigrinya, Harari (as both a riddle and a saying), Yoruba, Akan, Feylî Kurdish, Armenian and Moroccan Judeo-Arabic.
- In paremiology, "comparative" and "contrastive" are used almost as synonyms: comparing proverbs includes finding where they differ.

## Interesting ideas
- The paper tracks one proverb across several collections and notes exactly what changes: verb form (gerund vs. imperfect), synonymous phrasings for lacking food, "teeth" vs. "molar teeth". This gives a fine-grained map of variation around a stable core.
- Proverbs are matched by the underlying message (do not trust before the end; offspring resemble parents) rather than by shared words, even when the images are completely different, e.g. hedgehog, duck, mouse, burning coal.
- The author notices that languages assign different "kinship degrees" to the same pair of concepts: sleep is a brother, a paternal cousin, equal to, or a small version of death. A relation can thus be graded rather than binary.
- Treating comparison as finding both shared core and differing detail is an evaluation stance: an equivalence is credited, and its differences are recorded alongside.

## For Mova

How these ideas could serve Mova, our small open language model — its files, stages and tests:

- **I1** (tokens): Variant sets like these could serve as test cases checking that the lemmatizer and morphology map differently inflected forms of the same verb to one lemma.
- **I2** (frames): Proverbs could be represented as abstract schemas (X's child has X's property) so that structurally different sentences fill the same frame, without relying on word overlap.
- **I3** (world): The knowledge layer could store similarity between concepts as a typed or graded relation, so the world model can explain how close two notions are said to be.
- **I4** (back): When checking text → graph → text or translation output, scoring could separate preservation of the core message from changes in imagery or wording. This shows which kind of drift occurred.
