## Summary
This item is a short review by Xavier Campos Vilanova (SELIM) of Janet Bately's 1993 booklet, a preliminary bibliography of source studies for anonymous Old English homilies. The bibliography addresses a practical need. Compilers of the Fontes Anglo-Saxonici register of written sources used in Anglo-Saxon England need to know which relevant publications already exist. The booklet also records how source scholarship has developed since its earliest days. Bately organizes the material from general to specific: manuscript collections first, then major modern collections, then general studies, then individual homilies, with appendices and an author index at the end. The reviewer praises it as careful and useful. He treats source work as cumulative and never finished, a task carried forward by many contributors. He also notes that the booklet is the first in a planned monograph series of the Fontes project, produced jointly by British and American institutions.

## Key points
- The booklet has VI + 76 pages and was published by CEMERS, SUNY Binghamton. It was free to Old English Newsletter subscribers and was handed out at the Tenth Open Meeting of Fontes Anglo-Saxonici (King's College London, 22 March 1994).
- The structure runs as follows:
  - Section A covers manuscript collections: Blickling, Bodley 343, Vercelli and Vespasian Homilies.
  - Section B lists eight major modern collections.
  - Section C gathers 116 studies that deal with two or more homilies.
- Section D treats individual homilies in three groups: 50 for specified occasions, 58 for unspecified occasions (I) and 16 for unspecified occasions (II). It is heavily cross-referenced and includes unpublished dissertations.
- Appendix I links the homilies to Cameron's (1973, 1975, 1979) lists of Old English texts. Appendix II draws mainly on Ker (1957) and Cameron.
- The author index names 114 scholars, and the oldest cited work dates from 1705.

## Interesting ideas
- Arranging a reference resource as an "inverted pyramid", from collections down to individual items, lets users enter at the level of detail they need.
- A concordance appendix maps each item to an established external catalogue (Cameron's text list, Ker's manuscript catalogue), which anchors the bibliography to shared identifiers.
- The work treats source attribution as provisional and cumulative, built up by many hands rather than settled once.
- Dense internal cross-references let a reader move from one homily entry to its manuscripts, facsimiles and editions without searching again.
- The bibliography keeps a historical snapshot of scholarship, back to 1705, rather than listing only current work, which preserves the provenance of ideas.

## For Mova

How these ideas could serve Mova, our small open language model — its files, stages and tests:

- **I1** (world): The compiled knowledge layer could be organized the same way, from ontology-level collections down to single entities, so lookups can start broad and narrow down step by step.
- **I2** (world): Each knowledge-graph entity could carry explicit mappings to WordNet, FrameNet and Wikidata IDs, making cross-resource joins explainable and checkable.
- **I3** (learn): Silver annotations could be stored as revisable claims with their witnesses attached, so later parsers or teachers can refine them instead of overwriting them.
- **I4** (answer): Answer explanations could link each claim back to the frame, tree node and source sentence it came from, giving the reader a navigable trail.
- **I5** (learn): Versioned evaluation logs that record which model or rule first produced a result would help trace regressions and credit earlier repair rules.
