## Summary
The ASFALDA project aims to build a French counterpart of FrameNet. It will produce a lexicon linking French lexical units to frames, a layer of frame-semantic annotation over existing syntactic treebanks, and tools for shallow semantic analysis. A three-year project cannot match the coverage of the English resource, so the authors use a hybrid plan. The first phase works domain by domain. A later phase will annotate selected frequent lemmas exhaustively.

This paper covers the first phase. Domain experts selected English FrameNet frames for several notional domains, such as commercial transaction, verbal communication, cognitive positions and causality, and remodeled frames that did not fit French. Candidate French entries came from two automatically transferred lexicons. Pairs of experts validated these candidates, adjudicators reconciled disagreements, and a final pass checked lemmas linked to multiple frames. The resulting lexicon has 106 frames and 2244 lexeme/frame pairs. The authors argue that grouping work by domain makes frame boundaries more consistent and gives complete coverage within each chosen domain. This prepares the ground for pre-annotating the treebanks.

## Key points
- Annotation targets are the French Treebank (about 18,500 newspaper sentences, in its SPMRL 2013 dependency version) and the Sequoia treebank (about 3,000 sentences from news, Europarl, Wikipedia and medical texts).
- Section 3 describes seven notional domains: commercial transaction, verbal communication, judgment/evaluation, cognitive positions, spatial relations, temporal relations and causality. The conclusion, however, refers to six.
- Candidate lexical units were merged from two English-to-French transfer methods: word alignment on parallel corpora (Padó and Lapata, 2005) and bilingual dictionaries with filtering heuristics (Mouton et al., 2010). Validation was done in the Asfalinks GUI.
- The polysemy check covered 282 lemmas linked to several frames. It added 49 lexeme/frame associations, removed 46, and produced disambiguation tests for annotators.
- The final lexicon has 106 frames, 2244 lexeme/frame pairs and 1936 lemmas. Restricted to lemmas attested in the treebanks, it has 1638 pairs and 1359 lemmas. Annotation will be done with the Salto tool.
