## Summary
Most neural table-to-text systems are judged on whether they faithfully restate cell values. People, however, routinely draw conclusions from data, such as comparisons, superlatives and counts. Chen et al. define logical NLG: given an open-domain Wikipedia table, a model must produce statements that the table logically entails rather than merely echoes.

They build the LogicNLG corpus from the entailed statements in TabFact's "complex channel." It covers arbitrary schemas and operations like max/min, sum, comparison and counting. Triple-extraction checks fail on such sentences, so the authors add approximate fidelity metrics based on semantic parsing (SP-Acc), NLI (NLI-Acc) and adversarial sentence pairs, alongside BLEU and perplexity.

They argue that left-to-right decoding struggles when a token logically depends on words that come later. To test this, they compare LSTM, Transformer and GPT-2 models trained with RL, adversarial regularization, or a coarse-to-fine scheme that first drafts a sketch. Pre-training improves both fluency and fidelity. RL and adversarial training gain fidelity at fluency's expense. Coarse-to-fine raises fidelity while keeping fluency high. Even so, human judges rate only about a fifth of the best model's outputs as correct.

## Key points
- LogicNLG has 28,450 training, 4,260 validation and 4,305 test examples drawn from 7,392 Wikipedia tables. Each table has five statements averaging about 11 words.
- Tables come from open, diverse domains, mainly sports, politics and entertainment. This diversity rules out schema-specific rules, unlike WEATHERGOV, WikiBIO or ROTOWIRE.
- The authors single out a core weakness of monotonic generation: the order in which words are emitted often differs from the order in which their logic must be resolved. For example, a number in a sentence may depend on entities mentioned after it.
- On an adversarial positive/negative set, the parsing-based checker agrees with humans about 60% of the time and the NLI-based checker about 65%. The scores are therefore rough, but their trends match human evaluation.
- In fine-grained analysis, models handle ordering and entity comparisons best and fail at numeric aggregation such as sum or average. Code, data and a CodaLab LogicNLG challenge are publicly released.
