## Summary
This survey asks how users can get more reliable, accurate and relevant output from large language models by shaping their inputs. It does not introduce new data or experiments. Instead, it organizes existing prompting research into a structured overview. It first traces how input design has mattered across AI history, from rule-based systems in the 1950s to the transformer era, which is the review's main focus. It then covers:
- basic tactics, such as precise instructions, role-prompting and iterative refinement, illustrated with GPT-4 outputs;
- advanced strategies, such as chain-of-thought, self-consistency and generated knowledge;
- learnable prompting for vision-language models.

The review also covers how prompt methods are evaluated, where they are applied, and how adversarial prompts threaten LLM security. Its main conclusion is that careful prompt design substantially improves model behaviour and can reduce hallucinations. It also argues that defences such as adversarial training are needed. The authors see better understanding of model internals and AI agents as the next frontier. The paper is a practical map for anyone building LLM-based NLP tools.

## Key points
- All illustrative examples were generated with GPT-4. The paper notes that GPT-4 is estimated to be far larger than GPT-3's 175 billion parameters.
- VLM prompting methods reviewed include CoOp (Context Optimization), CoCoOp (Conditional Context Optimization) and MaPLe (Multimodal Prompt Learning), with CLIP and ALIGN as reference models.
- Prompt methods are assessed through both subjective (human) and objective (metric-based) evaluation. Applications discussed include education, content creation, programming and reasoning.
- The authors describe agent evolution in five stages: models, prompt templates, chains, agents and multi-agents. They define an agent as a large model combined with memory, planning and tool use.
- The paper was published in *Patterns* 6(6), 101,260 (2025). It was supported by the Natural Science Foundation of China (grant 12,271,047).
