## Summary
Extending LLMs to long inputs usually relies on continual pre-training with long documents. However, there has been no reliable way to judge whether a long sample actually contains meaningful long-range connections or is just loosely joined text. The authors first show that this matters. Llama2-7B trained on 32K sequences built from concatenated shorter pieces does worse on Needle-in-the-Haystack retrieval than the same model trained on genuinely long samples. They then propose LADM, a filtering framework. It runs candidate texts through a small long-context model and reads its attention patterns to estimate how much later parts of a text rely on earlier ones. The scores are computed in three stages: span pairs, then each span, then the whole sample. The highest-scoring samples are kept for continual training. Using about 1B training tokens from a multi-domain corpus, LADM beats competing selection methods on LongBench and matches random sampling with half the data. This makes long-context training cheaper and more targeted.

## Key points
- **Scorer model and scores:**
  - The "Long Attention Calculator" is TinyLlama-1.1B-v1.1 trained on random 32K-token sequences.
  - It produces a Pairwise Focus Score (PFS) for each pair of spans, based on accumulated attention.
  - These combine into an Aggregated Focus Score (AFS) per span.
  - The AFS values are then combined into a sample-level Contextual Dependency Score (CDS), weighted by attention spread (standard deviation) and by distance between spans.
- **Main results:**
  - LADM gives an average gain of 2.16% on LongBench across four models of different sizes and architectures.
  - In the Llama2-7B ablation, removing the std weights lowers the LongBench average from 37.83 to 36.88. Removing the length weights lowers it to 36.49.
- **Efficiency:**
  - With span settings d_AFS = d_CDS = 4, scoring costs about 2.46 s per sample, similar to the ProLong baseline.
  - CDS rankings stay consistent across hyper-parameter settings (Pearson correlation > 0.7).
- **Domain analysis:**
  - Within the Pile, PhilPapers, ArXiv, PubMed Central, FreeLaw and PG-19 receive high CDS.
  - Wikipedia and Ubuntu IRC score low.
  - ProLong, by contrast, rates PG-19 lowest.
- **Limitations and code:**
  - Experiments cover only 32K context and models up to 13B parameters.
  - Code is available at github.com/ZNLP/LADM.
