## Summary
Large language models handle difficult problems much better when they write out intermediate reasoning before giving an answer. The literature on this chain-of-thought (CoT) behaviour grew quickly but had not been reviewed systematically. Chu et al. (Harbin Institute of Technology, Huawei, Peng Cheng Laboratory) address this with a survey of "generalized chain-of-thought" (XoT), meaning any approach that solves a complex task through successive steps.

They give a probabilistic formulation contrasting ordinary few-shot prompting with CoT prompting. They then sort evaluation benchmarks by reasoning type and organize methods along three axes: how prompts are built, what structure the reasoning follows, and which techniques strengthen it. The survey also covers frontier topics: tool use, planning, and distilling reasoning into smaller models. It identifies open challenges, including multi-modal CoT, whether generated rationales are faithful, and the limited theory of why CoT emerges with scale.

The work offers no new experiments. Its value is as a structured map for newcomers and a reference for researchers, backed by a publicly released paper collection.

## Key points
- **Benchmark categories:** benchmarks are grouped into mathematical, commonsense, symbolic, logical and multi-modal reasoning.
- **Prompt construction:** approaches are split into manual (Few-shot CoT, PAL), automatic (Zero-shot CoT, Auto-CoT) and semi-automatic (AutoMate CoT, BoostedPrompt).
- **Reasoning topologies:** chain variants include CoT with natural-language rationales, PoT with program rationales, and CoS with symbol sequences. Tree variants include ToT, and graph variants include GoT. Self-Consistency adds majority voting across sampled chains.
- **Enhancement methods:** verify-and-refine, question decomposition (L2M), knowledge enhancement (CoK), self-ensemble, and efficient reasoning.
- **Scope and resources:** papers were collected mainly from ACL-family venues, NeurIPS, ICLR, ICML, COLING and arXiv. The resources are released at github.com/zchuz/CoT-Reasoning-Survey.
